APPLE HAS TAKEN THE COVERS OFF Apple TV+, a service that brings in a load of Apple-exclusive video content for a monthly subscription fee.
The service promises a load of TV stuff from major Hollywood names including Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell, which could see Apple pull a Netflix in terms of building a suite of exclusive content on top of its base service and Apple TV hardware.
Just how much exclusive content will be on Apple TV+ and how much it costs has yet to be revealed but we don't expect it to set folks back more than $10 a month, going by the price of Apple's other subscription services.
Come autumn, Apple TV+ will work both online and offline, with all the video content being downloadable, which makes it more than just a streaming service as was previously predicted.
Apple TV+ will sit in a re-jigged Apple TV app. Said app comes with a suite of improvements including smart recommendations and deeper video service interrogation where content can be downloaded and users are kept in one place rather than bounced between the Apple TV app and other video services.
But the big thing for Apple TV is it will come to smart TVs from the likes of Samsung, Sony, LG and other big brands, as well as Roku TV sticks and Amazon's FireTV, which is a rather un-Apple move.
Yet much like it opened Apple Music and iTunes to smart TVs and Amazon Echo speakers, such a move which will help it widen the scope of Apple TV to appeal to as many people as possible, rather than just Apple hardware users.
The trio of new services is indicative of a move by Apple to make more money through software rather than hardware, not that it does too badly through App Store sales.
But iPhone sales haven't been as stellar as they used to be of late, so bringing in more cash through services is one way for Apple to keep its coffers almost comically full. µ
