STREAMING GIANT Netflix has confirmed that it won't be part of Apple's incoming video service.
Rumours had suggested this would be the case, and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings confirmed the company's decision to shun Apple's upgraded TV service on Monday.
"We prefer to let our customers watch our content on our service," he said at an event attended by Recode. "We have chosen not to integrate with their service."
When quizzed about the incoming competition, Hastings said the biggest challenge for Netflix is to "not get too distracted" by rivals but still "learn lessons" from them.
"We've always had massive competitors," Hastings added. "We've been competing with Amazon in video streaming. These are amazing, large, well-funded companies with very significant efforts. But you do your best job when you have great competitors.
"They are going to do some great shows. I'm going to be envious. They're going to come up with some great ideas. We're going to want to borrow those."
Netflix's move is hardly surprising given its already-strained relationship with Apple; the firm refused to be part of Apple's TV app when it first launched in 2016, and in 2018, Apple stopped selling Netflix subscriptions through its App Store.
It might not be the only company to refuse to participate in Apple's streaming service either. CNBC reported last month that HBO is also unlikely to sign-up due to Apple's proposed revenue split terms
The TV app will reportedly allow users to sign up to services rather than going through services' own apps, and Apple is said pushing for a 30 per cent cut on every customer that subscribes; currently, Apple takes a 15 per cent cut on revenue from customers that sign up to HBO Now, Netflix, and other streaming apps through the App Store.
Despite this resistance, Apple will launch its Netflix competitor in less than a week's time on 25 March, alongside its long-rumoured news subscription service. µ
