ONE OF THE very first things some people do upon buying the newest and most beautiful smartphone is to wrap it up in cheap-looking plastic. It may look ugly, but at least its inner beauty will be protected to be sold on when it's no longer the best-looking device around.
But given people seem to be going gaga for foldables, just how will that work exactly? The tried-and-tested cutout just won't work if the whole screen bends, will it? Well, Spigen thinks it will - at least in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
The firm has revealed three models - Tough Armour, Ultra Hybrid and Thin Fit - which will sell for around $20 each. All of them look pretty familiar, with the unfolded screen treated as the main display, with a second cut-out for the smaller closed window.
Of course, Samsung's take on folding is relatively simple. It's hard to imagine this working on Xiaomi's prototype device that folds into three. Fortunately for case manufacturers, that's even more of a prototype than the upcoming retail foldables for now.
If you're assuming Spigen's quick-out-of-the-blocks prototype is indicative of an NDA-packed close relationship with Samsung, you're mistaken. A Spigen developer told The Verge that the company had around 20 different prototypes based on the various folding phone rumours doing the rounds.
"We had to gather all the rumours and find as many sources as possible to analyse the new structure of the phone," the source said.
Despite this lack of a head start, the company reckons the cases will be ready to launch alongside the Galaxy Fold in April. Though given the phone is going to be produced in pretty small quantities, Spigen may well find that all this hassle wasn't really worth the effort. If you do end up with a Galaxy Fold, maybe buy one though - after all, if you're spending nearly two grand on a phone, what's an extra $20 between friends? µ
