IT IS FIVE YEARS SINCE THE LAUNCH of the first Raspberry Pi computer and the Foundation has celebrated with a gift to us all, a new version of the tiny Zero model that adds wireless connectivity.
Oh happy days. Throw out your wireless adapter, or it back if you still have the receipt and it is not showing many signs of wear. Alternatively, you can put it on an auction site, or just keep it so that you can still play with the £5 version of the Pi Zero that you got when the wonderful company gave it away for free on the front of a magazine.
The new and improved Raspberry Pi Zero Wireless adds the wireless functionality from the Raspberry Pi 3B, equipping it with 802.11n wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.0, and makes the miniature PC as connected as one of those guys that you see walking down the street saying hello to everyone.
The guy walking down the street probably just has something up with him, but the Pi Zero has a lot more going for it.
Here is a list of specifications. Please bear in mind that we could have detailed each of these on a single page and encouraged you to click through each of one, but we won't do that. It would be totally counter to the idea of the Pi Zero, which is to be small and beautiful. You can see by the pics. Look at it. It is small as heck. If it was a cockroach it would be big, but as a computer it is f**king tiny.
Oh, anyway, specs. You'll find a 1Ghz, single-core CPU, 512MB RAM, Mini-HDMI and USB ports, microSUB power, an HAT-compatible 40-pin header, composite video and reset headers and a CSI camera connector.
New injection moulded cases with interchangeable lids (above) will also be made available for the Raspberry Pi Zero Wireless.
The spanking new Raspberry Pi Zero, which costs a £9.60, will be available in the UK, along with the US, Canada, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Japan. Eben Upton tells us that the Foundation will build 25,000 a week to ensure demand is met as quickly as possible.
We have one and we are still playing with it. As far as reviews go, so far we can tell you that it is ace. µ
