SAMSUNG HAS PUT its rivalry with Apple to one side and has made its Gear smartwatches compatible with the iPhone.
As CES was coming to a close, the firm quietly pushed out an iOS app for its Gear S2, Gear S3, and Gear Fit 2 wearables, making the Tizen-powered smartwatches compatible with the iPhone for the first time. Until now, they were only compatible with Android.
The Gear S app, available to download for free from the App Store, lets the handful of iPhone users with a Samsung smartwatch to manage and monitor features and applications installed through Gear Appstore, and also allows them to sync fitness data collected from S Health.
While this all sounds well and good, the app is already receiving mixed reviews over on the App Store.
"Easy to setup the Gear S3 Frontier from AT&T but lacks the functions that justify the purchase of the watch," one user whines. "Properly displays notifications from the iPhone and shows the content of a Text Message but no way to reply."
Another moaned: "Unfortunately this app is riddled with bugs. Battery meter does not show current battery status, the conn action speed between the two devices when installing an app is excruciatingly slow, not able to reply to texts, and random disconnects are the ones I have run into."
Still, Samsung is feeling pretty pleased with itself. Younghee Lee, executive vice president of global marketing at Samsung, said: "We're constantly looking for ways to enhance our offerings and we do this in part by listening to what our customers want - and that includes greater access to our cutting-edge wearable technologies with iOS support.
"By offering Android and iOS compatibility with our latest Gear devices, we're giving users more ways to optimise their wearable experiences and connect to Samsung's Galaxy of possibilities."
Naturally, Apple's own smartwatch still won't work with a Samsung smartphone. µ
