GOOGLE'S CHROMECAST devices appear to have a bug that is causing certain routers to crash or boot-loop while the devices themselves do the same.
The problem came to light when one of the INQ team (guess who) spent 12 hours trying to work out why their home network wasn't working. Eventually, it transpired that there is a thread in the Google Product Forums highlighting the issue which seems to have been caused by a firmware update.
The issue is isolated to certain brands of router, and mostly to Chromecast Audio devices, however, in our case, the problem persisted until we also disconnected the new Chromecast Ultra too.
Although the issue, which appears to be particularly affecting users of BT Home Hub and Plusnet One devices, some users have reported similar problems with other brands too.
The issue first came to light in September, but on Thursday, a statement was appended to the thread which explains: "We have become aware of some Chromecast Audio users with BT Home Hub and Plusnet One routers having connectivity issues after a recent Chromecast Audio firmware update.
"After the update of Chromecast Audio some BT Home Hub and Plusnet routers trigger a reboot and disconnect the Chromecast Audio from the network. This issue seems to be isolated to some BT related routers. Our team has been working to address this issue quickly by adding a workaround for the BT routers in our next firmware version which is now available for download.”
The problem is that it’s actually quite difficult to download the new firmware if you’re finding that your system keeps going loopy.
Current advice is to use a different router, join the preview program and try to download the preview firmware, or just hang on for a fix.
Black Friday has seen the price of the Chromecast come down to as low as £18 for the AV version and £15 for audio only, so there are likely to be quite a few new ones around that may not all be behaving as they should. One might say a Cast of thousands. Or one might not.
We’ve asked Google for an update and they are looking into it for us. µ
