CHIPMAKER Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 835, its next-generation mobile processor and the first to be built on the 10nm FinFET manufacturing process.
The Snapdragon 835 - not the Snapdragon 830, as expected - will be built by Samsung, the first company to start mass producing chips using the 10nm manufacturing process.
Compared with Qualcomm's current 14nm Snapdragon 821 processor, also made by Samsung, the new CPU will offer a 30 per cent increase in area efficiency yielding 27 per cent better performance, and a 40 per cent lower power consumption, with Qualcomm touting "significant improvements" to battery life.
Using 10nm FinFET, the Snapdragon 835 processor will also have a smaller chip footprint, giving OEMs more usable space inside upcoming products to support larger batteries or slimmer designs.
Keith Kressin, senior vice president of product management at Qualcomm, said: "We are excited to continue working together with Samsung in developing products that lead the mobile industry.
"Using the new 10nm process node is expected to allow our premium-tier Snapdragon 835 processor to deliver greater power efficiency and increase performance while also allowing us to add a number of new capabilities that can improve the user experience of tomorrow’s mobile devices.”
Support for Quick Charge 4.0 is also included, which Qualcomm claims offers 20 per cent faster charging than its last-gen tech, giving you up to five hours of extra battery life with just five minutes on charge and 50 per cent battery in 15 minutes.
Qualcomm also said that Quick Charge 4.0 is fully compliant with Google’s new specifications for Type-C charging thanks to its more accurate measurement of voltage, current and temperature to protect devices and chargers from damage and overcharging.
This comes after Google said last week that Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 tech is not compatible with Nougat.
The Snapdragon 835 is in production now and expected to ship in devices in the first half of 2017. Samsung's Galaxy S8, tipped to be released in April, is likely to be one of the first Snapdragon 835-powered smartphones. µ
