A PENNSYLVANIA MAN who earlier this year plead guilty to computer hacking charges related to the 2014 celebrity nude photo leak has been sentenced to 18 months porridge.
Authorities announced on Thursday that Ryan Collins, 36, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for a felony violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
Prosecutors said that Collins, between November 2012 until the beginning of September 2014, used a phishing scheme to obtain the login credentials of at least 50 iCloud accounts and 72 Gmail accounts, most of which belonged to female celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence and Avril Lavigne.
In some instances Collins would use a software program to download the entire contents of the victims' Apple iCloud backups, prosecutors said, adding that he also ran a modeling scam in which he tricked his victims into sending him nude photographs.
These nude images were leaked online in an event known as 'The Fappening' (or 'Celebgate', depending on what sort of circles you move), although investigators said they found no evidence that Collins himself leaked the photos.
David Bowdich, the assistant director in charge of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office, said: "By illegally accessing intimate details of his victims' personal lives, Mr. Collins violated their privacy and left many to contend with lasting emotional distress, embarrassment and feelings of insecurity.
"We continue to see both celebrities and victims from all walks of life suffer the consequences of this crime and strongly encourage users of internet-connected devices to strengthen passwords and to be skeptical when replying to emails asking for personal information."
A second chap involved in the nude photos plunder, Edward Majerczyk, 28, of Illinois, was charged under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act earlier this year for hacking 300 iCloud and Gmail accounts, many of which belonged to celebs. He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison. µ
