APPLE HAS suffered a translation problem in Hong Kong and is marketing the iPhone 7 as, essentially, a penis.
The penis, or wang, is a man's sexual and biological appendage and not an iPhone, but this has not stopped Apple going to press with local adverts that suggest otherwise.
The campaign has the glib and punchy 'This is 7' tagline. Unfortunately, this does not translate well in Hong Kong and residents have started to question why Apple is shouting 'This is penis' at them from bus stops and other advertising opportunities.
Translation is a tricky thing, and firms often get it wrong. 'This is 7' actually translates as 'Penis is here' or 'Exactly is penis', neither of which will do much to sell a mobile phone.
Unless, of course, it is a penis-shaped mobile phone that you could pee through while making a phone call, or a mobile phone for your penis.
Hong Kongers have rushed to Facebook to laugh at the mention of penises, and a news website called Quartz directed us to a page that we would have to translate to find funny.
We reckon that translating '7' into 'penis' in Cantonese and back out again would make any effort in that direction pointless, so we are taking the site's word for it.
We have, of course, asked Apple whether it wants to comment on the penis problem. So far it has not delivered a response.
Hilariously, if you like this sort of thing, Samsung, which is often quick to mock Apple, has already suffered the penis translation problem after being informed that 'Note 7' sounds like 'stick of penis' in Hong Kong.
We find it hard to imagine in what kind of shop this would cause confusion, but then we have not been to Hong Kong. µ
