SAMSUNG HAS SURPRISED NOBODY with the unveiling of the Galaxy S6 Edge+, the firm's latest smartphone for big-handed folk.
However, the firm has surprised many with the news that the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy Note 5, which was also unveiled today, won't be coming to the UK. The firm said this is due to "marketing reasons," and hinted that the handset might be available to Brits in the future.
Still, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ sports near identical specs to its Note-branded sibling, minus support for Samsung's S Pen stylus. There's a 5.7in 1440x2560 QHD Super AMOLED dual screen display, which comes powered by firm's own 64-bit octa-core Exynos processor based on a 14nm architecture and 4GB RAM, more than the 3GB stuffed inside the original Galaxy S6 Edge.
The Galaxy S6 Edge+ features a premium metal and glass design similar to that found on its Galaxy S6 Edge predecessor, and measures in at 6.9mm thick while tipping the scales at 153g, compared to 132g for its smaller-screened sibling.
The Galaxy S6 Edge+ runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, and Samsung has added a new stripped-back version of the TouchWiz user interface on top. This equips the phone with a handful of the firm's own applications, including S Note and S Health. Samsung has added some more functionality to the dual display too, with the addition of 'Apps Edge' that lets you quick launch your favourite applications.
There's a 16MP sensor with optical image stabilisation on the rear of the handset, and a 5MP sensor on the front. In a bid to attract, ugh, 'vloggers, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ also comes with a live broadcast feature, that lets you film video using the smartphone's camera and have it live-streamed straight to YouTube.
The Galaxy S6 Edge+ will be available with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, and - no doubt putting off some potential buyers - this can't be expanded via microSD.
Rounding off the specs is a non-removable 3,000mAh battery that can be juiced to 100 percent in 90 minutes, support for wireless charging, Cat 6 LTE, and Bluetooth 4.2 LE connectivity.
The Galaxy S6 edge+ will be available to pre-order from the 18th August and available to buy in the UK from the 4th September. It will be available in either gold or black, but there is no word on pricing just yet. µ
