IMAGINATION TECHNOLOGIES has updated its MIPS-based Creator CI20 development board with improvements aimed at boosting performance.
Launched late last year, the Creator CI20 is a single-board minicomputer which rivals the Raspberry Pi and is aimed at Android and Linux developers.
It is based around a system-on-a-chip combining CPU, graphics and I/O circuitry, featuring an I/O connector block compatible with that of the Raspberry Pi, meaning it could be plugged into many of the same projects.
The Imagination board hit the market in January targeting open source developers, the maker community and system integrators, providing them with tools and encouraging them to create a wide range of applications and projects.
The new version includes an improved board layout that is said to optimise WiFi performance while making it easier to mount in a case.
"We've also designed a new 3D printable enclosing, [and] makers can use the source files available from our website to build their own versions," said Imagination.
On the software side, the firm has added support for FlowCloud, an IoT API designed to connect devices to the cloud.
This compatibility for FlowCloud services is described as an important aspect of the upgrade to "enable rapid development of IoT applications".
"FlowCloud gives users comprehensive device-to-cloud infrastructure and services, enabling IoT innovators to rapidly create new applications based on CI20 such as home automation, robotics, industrial monitoring and control, and many others," the firm said.
There are also new features added to Linux and Android. For example, Imagination has made several improvements in Android 4.4, including audio over HDMI and Bluetooth, built-in Ethernet settings, audio recording, and audio jack auto-detection to make it easy to switch audio output from HDMI to headphones and vice versa.
Support for USB storage is also coming soon, the firm said.
For Linux, Imagination is working on updating to kernel version 3.18 which will offer a boost in vital performance areas such as memory speed and graphics.
The Creator CI20 board will be available to pre-order soon from the Imagination store, with an estimated shipping time of June 2015. µ
