A DEVELOPER has successfully hacked Apple's Watch OS to run a web browser, hinting that a jailbreak could be incoming.
Comex, a former Apple intern and the well-known developer behind JailBreakMe, has posted a video of the Google homepage displayed on the Apple Watch, but has not released any details about the hack.
I always wanted a web browser on my wrist. http://t.co/hh52DsJdje— comex (@comex) May 10, 2015
The demo, which perhaps affirms why Apple chose not to include the Safari web browser on the Watch given its impracticality, shows Comex awkwardly launching the option to copy or define text in the browser, just like the feature available on the iPhone and iPad.
While demonstrating how unnecessary it is for the Apple Watch to feature a web browser, the clip shows that it is possible to get the device to run arbitrary code. This could be the first step towards a jailbreak of the Apple Watch, although Comex makes no such promises.
Comex hasn't released any details, but has hit out at critics who have said that the browser is 'just an app'.
Heh, a lot of people on Reddit think my demo is “just an app” which is easy to write. No, that’s not how WatchKit works.— comex (@comex) May 10, 2015
Apple has said that a native software development kit is in the works and, once finished, will let developers produce native applications which run entirely on the Watch.
Currently, the wearable's apps pull all of their information from the user's iPhone, rather than creating it independently.
Apple revealed last week that the Apple Watch might soon be available for buyers to pick up in store, hinting that the firm will soon overcome the stock problems.
Some people ordering the Apple Watch are now seeing the message 'Pick up: Available soon' next to their local Apple Store location.
However, the option is currently disabled and Apple has yet to comment, so it remains to be seen when buyers will be able to pick up their smartwatch on the high street. µ
