RESEARCH HAS FOUND that Liverpool mobile phone users have the best performing network in the country.
Rootmetrics, which does this sort of thing, applied a scoring system for cities and a way of measuring the performance of providers EE, O2, Three and Vodafone and their serving of mobile internet, texts and calls.
London, which we are expected to believe is the digital hub of the UK, ranks fifth in its tables, below Liverpool, Manchester, Coventry and Birmingham.
Cities are given a score out of 100, and Liverpool picked up 92.5. Manchester got 90.9, Coventry 90.1, Birmingham 89.6, and London 88.8. Hull came in at the bottom of the 16-city list with 78.4.
Rootmetric splits the scores further and rates each city on each of three network features: data, text and calls
There are some changes across the lists, but Liverpool tops all three tables. London's position varies somewhat and we find it in 14th place in the calls list.
In the texts and data categories the capital performs better and has third and fourth positions respectively.
Rootmetrics said that the network operators are pushing hard to serve their customers and that the placing of London came as a surprise.
"The top performing metro areas of the UK are seeing huge competition between the network operators," said RootMetrics CEO and president Bill Moore.
"This deeper look into our results shows that the level of performance people experience can hugely vary depending on where they live.
"Whilst geographically Hull may not be that far from Liverpool, when it comes to mobile performance it's light years behind.
"Given its importance to the UK economy and our increasing reliance on mobile devices for commerce, it is a surprise that London did not come first in a single category and, overall, only came fifth." µ
