FAILED PHONE SHOP Phones 4u will not offer refunds on iPhone 6 pre-orders after all, despite previously having promised that buyers would get their cash back.
Phones 4u announced that it was going into administration earlier this month, three days after it began taking pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets.
While the retailer quickly promised that it would refund those who pre-ordered new iPhones, it has since come clean, admitting that people who laid down upfront payments won't be getting any money back from it.
There is a glimmer of hope for those who pre-ordered a new iPhone on an EE contract, with the mobile operator pledging to fullfil orders.
For those who didn't pick up an iPhone on EE, the retailer's administator, Pricewaterhousecoopers (PwC), has advised that to get their cash back, buyers will have to go through their credit card companies.
In a note on its website, PwC said, "Customers who have paid using credit cards should contact their credit card company to try and seek resolution to this matter."
If you don't have any luck, or are unable to sort through a credit card company, you have another option, that that's to file a refund claim with PwC. The bad news is that this could take months for the administrator to process, without a guarantee of a full refund at the end of it.
"If you are unable to obtain a refund through your credit card company and wish to register a claim, your claim (to the extent you have one) will rank as an unsecured claim in the Administration - please select the relevant claim form from the Creditors and suppliers tab on the left," PwC added.
As if that wasn't bad enough, in its email to customers who pre-ordered an iPhone, Phones 4u sent the mass email out with all recipients' addresses visible.
