OPEN SOURCE MEDIA PLAYER XBMC is likely to become part of the Android based Ouya games console feature set, as the projects have revealed that they are working together to ensure interoperability.
Ouya is gaining a lot of interest, and already has a lot of financial backers on Kickstarter. The on demand gaming service Onlive has already revealed that it wants a piece of the action, as does video service Vevo, and the XMBC media player project is the latest outfit to express interest and excitement at its involvement. It's not a done deal yet, but things are looking very positive.
"Maybe it was inevitable. Maybe it was because of the hundreds, if not thousands, of demands on Twitter, in blogs, on Facebook, in Reddit, and in Kickstarter comments. Maybe it's because many of Team Ouya support XBMC, and nearly a third of Team XBMC members are Ouya backers," says a statement from the open source media outfit.
"Regardless, we are delighted to announce that XBMC will be working with Ouya to ensure that XBMC works well on the Ouya platform. Ouya's Android underpinnings and XBMC's work on Android (soon to be merged into master, pending final sign-offs!) will dramatically speed up that effort, as will early XBMC dev access to Ouya prototypes."
Talks are described as being in their early stages, but "ongoing and positive". More information is expected to be released when it becomes available.
It doesn't seem like five minutes since the Android based console first raised its head and now, on the eve of closing its fund raising period, it is backed by almost £5m in investment. µ
