SOCIAL NEWS WEB SITE Digg will relaunch in August after a complete rebuild.
Earlier this month the seven-year old community based news ranking web site announced it had been sold to technology development company Betaworks for just $500,000, despite having been valued at $175m.
Today, the web site said in a post on rethinkdigg.com that a team of 10 engineers, designers and editors at News.me is rebuilding it from scratch and "wants your help".
"As betaworks and Digg both announced on their blogs, we are taking over Digg and turning it back into a startup," said Digg. "What they didn't mention is that we're rebuilding it from scratch, in six weeks."
The web site said that on 1 August it will roll out a new v1, "taking the first step towards (re)making Digg the best place to find, read and share the most interesting and talked about stories on the Internet - and we want your help".
Digg has asked users to fill out a questionnaire to help it shape its redesign, with questions relating to the quality of stories on the homepage and whether you would recommend the current version to a friend.
"We care because Digg represented the messiness of the Internet at its best," the web site said. "It showed us that, out of the noise and the clutter, between the lolcats and the Kim Kardashian stories, a passionate but uncoordinated group of strangers could come together to create something coherent and substantial."
It added, "Alone, each of these individuals had no following, but together they were able to capture a global audience with stories that the mainstream media had mistakenly deemed unimportant. Digg is worth protecting. To do that, we need your help, your input and your support."
Although it is set to launch the redesigned web site on 1 Ausgust, Digg said it will be focusing on "only the most important features" and if it is missing anything, users should let it know and "there will be a Day 10 and a Day 20 and a Day 100" to help it rebuild the web site. µ
