SELLER OF SHINY TOYS Apple has had its new Ipad jailbroken just hours after it went on sale.

Apple's third Ipad hit the stores on Friday and it didn't take long for a talented software developer going by the handle 'i0n1c' to break free from Apple's walled garden and jailbreak the new Ipad. The developer proceeded to record a video showing the jailbreak in action, with a fully functional Cydia app store.

A number of other developers, including the Iphone Dev Team announced the ability to jailbreak the Ipad. The Iphone Dev Team went so far as to say that it used a four month old method developed for the Ipad 2 to jailbreak the new Ipad running IOS 5.1.

Although i0n1c did not say how he jailbroke the new Ipad, the Iphone Dev Team said that to the best of its knowledge he used a different jailbreaking method than its own, adding that such news would be great for the community.

Apple's App Store might have over half a million applications but the firm carefully monitors what is available to Iphone and Ipad users. By jailbreaking IOS devices, users can load applications from third party app stores, typically using a graphical frontend such as Cydia to do so.

Given that Apple loses cash every time a user resorts to downloading from an unofficial app store, it seems pretty certain that the firm is trying hard to stop its devices from being jailbroken. However, given that it probably took developers longer to get their hands on an new Ipad than to jailbreak it, perhaps Apple should give up on its Orwellian quest to control its users. µ
