THE FRUIT THEMED COMPANY, Apple wants to make sure that production of its shiny toys is not halted by a shortage of small LCD panels.
According to the Nikkei business daily Toshiba will spend about $1.19 billion to build a factory for making small LCD panels, mainly to supply for Apple Iphones.
The facility in the Chinese Ishikawa prefecture will churn out low temperature polysilicon LCD panels that offer high resolutions.
Work on the plant will start by early next year, with production due to begin in the second half of 2011, Nikkei said.
Toshiba already makes low temperature polysilicon LCD panels at a facility in the region and its monthly production capacity of 8.55 million units is projected to more than double with the new factory, the Japanese daily said.
The Nikkei seems to think that Apple is underwriting the plant's construction. The company has had problems sourcing components for its shiny toys in the past and this has led to delays.
Having a plant dedicated to making LCD screens for its products will be better for Apple in the long run. µ
