INTERNET VIDEO WEBSITE Youtube has come up with a way for punters to search though its piles of videos of people's cats and dogs doing things they think are funny and babies falling over.
According to the outfit's blog, it is tricky to work out ways for people specify their searches for videos, particularly if you start with something as vague as "funny" or "cat".
It has come up with a prototype called "YouTube Topics on Search" and you can get to it from Testtube.
What it is doing is identifying topics on Youtube and associate videos with them. The website uses different sources to find these topics, including frequently used uploader keywords, common search queries, playlist names, and even sources outside Youtube such as Wikipedia articles.
So if you type in "obama" the site suggests other related topics tied to videos that you might want to explore, such as "michelle obama" or "john mccain."
Since this is Youtube, of course there is a video to show how it works. µ
