THE EUROPEAN UNION is apparently so satisfied with some recent changes to Apple's Iphone policies that it has dropped its probe and washed its hands of the whole thing.
European regulators had been readying an assault on Apple's legal department and had launched preliminary antitrust investigations into some of the cappuccino firm's Iphone policies. Now it appears they have called off their attack dogs and 'welcomed' some relaxed policies from the fruit themed company.
The contentious issues were some restrictions on the developer tools available to app-builders and some bothersome international warranty issues that left global shoppers unable to gain satisfaction when their off-shore purchased gadget went pips-up. The European Commission had launched preliminary investigations in both of these areas.
However, from now on these less-than-savoury elements are no longer a factor, and for its part the Commission is happy to slink back into its cave and consider its next target.
The EC's VP in charge of competition policy, Joaquín Almunia flexed his muscles and commented, "Apple's response to our preliminary investigations shows that the Commission can use the competition rules to achieve swift results on the market with clear benefits for consumers, without the need to open formal proceedings."
Whereas before Apple had limited its repairs services and warranty rights so that consumers could be denied assistance if they fell afoul of its "country of purchase" rule, this policy has now been dropped. This means that you can take that Isomething you bought in the US to a store in the UK to get it fixed. If, perish the thought, it should fail.
As for the developer rights, the EC said that its fears about anti-competitive behaviour had been assuaged by the firm's recent announcement that it will indeed let people use third party languages and tools to develop apps for inclusion in its Apps Store. µ
