FRUIT THEMED Apple is flogging its shiny toys in the glorious People's Republic of China by rolling out both the Iphone 4 and the WiFi version of the Ipad this month.
That Apple has managed to sell its pricey wares in mainland China at all still comes as a shock, not that Job's Mob is in for an easy ride. We reported in August that the Iphone tanked in China after Saint Steve laid down the law only to be told by China Mobile to go forth and multiply.
Steve moved over to second choice Unicom, which kowtowed to his demands before the Iphone bombed. That led to Unicom's profits dropping by 54 per cent as Chinese punters bought unlocked Iphones on the grey market instead.
Not put off by dismal sales, Jobs' drive to flog Apple's expensive gadgets to 1.3 billion Chinese has seen the company keep beating a dead horse with the Iphone 4.
Apple announced yesterday that it will be selling the Iphone 4 in Shanghai and Beijing retail stores from September 25. It will also be out this Saturday in China Unicom's retail stores but only to those who agree to get suckered into a two-year contract.
The problem for most tech savvy Chinese is that they can't afford over-priced Apple Ithings and the problem for Apple is that China is the world's biggest grey market. Apple might do okay in a few of the big cities but that likely won't translate into sales in the rest of the country.
But Saint Steve is not going shy away from hawking Apple's kit in China. The company also put the WiFi version of its Ipad on sale in China from Friday. China Tech Daily has reported that Apple's tablet is on sale in mainland China through Best Buy. µ
