THE END OF THE LEVEL. It's the place where cool, difficult or, hopefully, unusual things can happen.
There's a bunch of lists like this that have been written before, and as a result we're steering well clear of the usual suspects. Want to read about the amazement of changing to controller port 2 to fight Metal Gear Solid's Psycho Mantis? Changing your system clock to kill The End in that game's follow up? Or when Mike Tyson was in Punch Out!?
It's all out there already. For this list, we've rounded up gaming's truly greatest bosses while avoiding the clichés.
1. Hitler - Wolfenstein
The first clue that things are getting a bit weird with 1992's Wolfenstein 3D is when you open the first door in Episode 3, Floor 9 and are confronted with a weird floating dressing gown with Hitler's face that breathes fire.
After killing two more, you realise that's not the boss.
No, the boss is Der Fuhrer himself, stomping around in a bright blue robot and slicing through your treacherous American flesh with four chain guns. Shoot that enough, and the robot breaks. Keep shooting Hitler, and his body collapses into a bloody soup.
"Eva, auf wiedersehen," he mutters before falling to bits.
It's some secret history, alright.
