SAMSUNG ANNOUNCED the Galaxy S5 Mini on Tuesday, a not so miniature smartphone that offers users an affordable alternative to the flagship Samsung Galaxy S5.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini, as rumours had suggested, is not as mid-range as its predecessor, and sees Samsung kitting out its cheaper model with features similar to those of its flagship Galaxy S5, such as a fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor and IP67 certification. We've compared the Galaxy S5 Mini against the Galaxy S4 Mini on paper to see if these high-end specifications make a real difference.
Design and dimensions
Galaxy S5 Mini: 131x65x9.1mm, 120g
Galaxy S4 Mini: 125x61x8.9mm, 107g
Last year's Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini drew criticism for not being very 'miniature', so those critics will be pleased to hear that this year's model is even bigger. The Galaxy S5 Mini is taller than the Galaxy S4 Mini at 131mm versus 125mm, and chunkier at 9.1mm thick compared to 8.9mm. It's also slightly heavier at 120g, compared to 107g.
While it's larger, the Galaxy S5 Mini is arguably better looking than the Galaxy S4 Mini, featuring the same perforated casing design as the Samsung Galaxy S5. Following in the footsteps of its flagship sibling, the Galaxy S5 Mini also comes with the added bonus of a fingerprint scanner and a heart-rate sensor, while last year's Galaxy S4 Mini featured no such added bells and whistles.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini also boasts IP67 certification, unlike last year's model, which means it's resistant against water and dust.
Galaxy S5 Mini: 4.5in 720x1280 Super AMOLED display, 326ppi
Galaxy S4 Mini: 4.3in 540x960 Super AMOLED display, 256ppi
While again the Galaxy S5 Mini might see criticism regarding the size of its screen, the 4.5in 720x1280 resolution Super AMOLED screen is a huge improvement on the Galaxy S4 Mini's 4.3in 540x960 resolution display. Thanks to its higher resolution, the Galaxy S5 Mini boasts a much higher 326ppi pixel density, which while paling in comparison compared to the LG G3 for example, is an improvement on the Galaxy S4 Mini's 256ppi.
Galaxy S5 Mini: Quad-core 1.4GHz processor
Galaxy S4 Mini: Dual-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor
Samsung has yet to reveal what processor chip is inside the Galaxy S5 Mini, but has said that users can expect a quad-core chip clocked at 1.4GHz. While specifics are yet to be revealed, this might offer noticeable performance enhancements compared to the Galaxy S4 Mini's dual-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip
