CHINESE PHONE MAKER Huawei still isn't the biggest name in the smartphone industry, but it's hoping that calling its Ascend P6 handset the "world's thinnest smartphone" will help it compete with the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4.

Design
The Huawei Ascend P6 is all about design, according to Huawei, and at 6.2mm thick the handset claims the title of the world's thinnest smartphone.

In the real world that doesn't really mean a lot. Due to its boxy shape and large 4.7in screen we found the Huawei Ascend P6 quite uncomfortable to hold in one hand, whether it's the world's thinnest smartphone or not.

However, the Huawei Ascend P6 is a good looking smartphone. The handset's casing is constructed predominately from plastic, aside from the metal edging surrounding the device, which gives it a high-end feel, and the phone also boasts a curved back.

However, this rounded rear is the only design feature that sets the Ascend P6 apart from the iPhone, with the handset's look and feel clearly influenced by Apple's latest smartphone.

Our only other gripe is that the white model, which we've been testing, is quite prone to picking up dirt and grime, but the phone will be available in a less dirt-showing black model too.

Screen
The Huawei Ascend P6 features a 4.7in 720x1280 IPS+ LCD touchscreen with a pixel density of 312ppi. While its HD 720p display can't match the HD 1080p screens found on the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, phones that Huawei is looking to challenge with the Ascend P6, the handset's screen is still impressive.

During our time with the phone we found that the display remained consistently vibrant, whether we used it in artificial lighting or in the dark depths of the London Underground. The display did struggle slightly when we used it in direct sunlight, although it proved more legible than our iPhone 5 display.

Next: Performance, operating system.
