We check whether the Infinity's bundled dock is worth £200 more than the keyboard-less Ipad

AS THE MOST POWERFUL Android tablet yet, the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity will be released within a few days in the UK, entering the tablet market that has been dominated by Apple's new Ipad since its release almost six months ago.

Will the Infinity's features, including a bigger IPS+ display, lightweight design and bundled dock be enough to sway customers who are considering Apple's new Ipad? Is the bundled keyboard dock on the infinity worth £200 more than the keyboard-less Ipad? We aim to answer these questions with this head to head review.

Design and Build
Looking at style, finish and build quality, both the Infinity and the new Ipad are top class. Each device feels sturdy and their metal finishes mean they are both tough and durable while looking stylish.

Apple has long been renowned for the high-end design and finish of its devices, so any Android tablet maker attempting to take on the new Ipad in this area is going to have a tough time competing with the California firm's high standards. However, it's apparent that Asus has gone to great lengths to ensure that the Infinity's appearence can compete with that of the new Ipad.

The spun brushed metal effect on the case gives it a premium, stylish appearence, catching the light in a spiral pattern that will elicit plenty of "oohs" and "aahs"

The new Ipad's satin effect anodised aluminium casing looks and feels elegant and it isn't until you hold each tablet side by side that it becomes apparent that while the Infinity's metal-coated back looks expensive, it just isn't in the same league as the Ipad.

Another factor that works to the Ipad's advantage is the Infinity's colour options. It's always good to see a technology firm attempt to make its products unique in look, but Asus' metallic beige and purple colour choices could be perceived as a little feminine and won't be to everyone's tastes. The Ipad's black and white colour options are far more sensible.

However, when comparing measurements and weight, the new Ipad is both heavier and fatter than the Infinity. The Ipad measures 241x186x9.4mm and weighs 652g, while the Infinity measures 263x181x8.5mm and weighs 598g, though both the weight and thickness aren't too noticable when holding one in each hand at the same time.

Although the Infinity is lighter and thinner than the Ipad, the difference isn't significant enough to win this round. Apple's tablet has a much more high-end feel to it and at £399 - a starting price that is £200 less than the Infinity - this shouldn't be the case.

Winner: New Ipad.
