Beautiful display and high-end specs
Sony has crammed a jaw-dropping 5in OLED display with 960x544 resolution and multi-touch capabilities into the chassis. This is the outstanding feature of the device and goes a long way towards helping it replicate console quality graphics. Brightness and viewing angles are great, although some might find colours to be a little over-saturated.

Being a dedicated gaming machine, the Vita has high-end specifications that help blow competitors such as the Nintendo 3DS out of the water when it comes to performance.

The Vita is powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore chip that fanbois will no doubt be eager to overclock to the touted maximum frequency of 2GHz. This is backed up by a PowerVR Series5XT SGXMP+ GPU, 512MB of RAM and 128MB of virtual RAM. These components allow the device to render scrumptious graphics that are the closest to PS3 quality we have seen with a handheld device.

Sony has completely scrapped the Universal Media Disk (UMD) format in favour of the Vita card, a peripheral that is similar in size to an SD card. This means that the Vita is lighter and also runs silently compared to previous Playstation models.

Thankfully, Sony has chosen to leave out 3D technology, which up until now has been met with a mixed reception and is widely viewed as a gimmick in The INQUIRER office. This has no doubt helped to cut down on cost.

The only real niggle is the fact that there is no internal storage. Users will need to buy a Vita memory card, which is similar in size to a microSD card, to store content, and some applications and games will not work without this card. Most retailers are thankfully bundling a memory card with the device. Prices for the Vita card start at £15 for the 4GB capacity, rising to £28 for 16GB and £40 for 32GB, for those who do not buy a package deal.

Sony includes a front facing VGA camera that allow users to interact with games, by taking their photos and using them as icons, for example. There is also a rear-facing camera that is able to take pictures and record video at up to 640x480 resolution.
