TAIWANESE PHONE MAKER HTC's Incredible S is one of its flagship models with respectable hardware, a large 4-inch screen and an innovative design that is let down by its out of date software.

The phone looks smart with its all black matte finish and minimalist approach. The rubbery plastic case gives a nice feel, offers a good grip and handily hides finger print marks really well. HTC has gone for a contoured design that molds around the components.

While this looks quite cool we found that it makes holding the phone more uncomfortable than with other handsets. The minimalist approach means there are only two physical buttons on the phone, which are the power and volume controls. We found that the phone's symmetrical look meant that we often found we were holding the handset upside down by mistake.

The handset is a decent 135g weight and 11.7mm thick, which is almost 30g lighter than the HTC Desire HD and only 5g heavier than the Desire S. A small downside of the casing is that the back is quite tricky to remove.

The most stand-out feature of the phone is its large 4-inch screen, which is a happy medium between the HTC Desire S with its 3.7-inch display and the HTC Desire HD with its 4.3-inch screen.

The Super LCD display has 480x800 resolution that produces a crisp picture and we found the display brightness especially good. The size of the screen is particularly suited to browsing the Internet and watching video.

A subtle and satisfying trick that the Incredible S does is that it rotates the four touch buttons when you switch the phone between portrait and landscape mode.

In terms of hardware the phone has much the same line-up as HTC puts in all of its current high end phones. There's a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1GB of RAM and 1.1GB of internal storage.

Just over 1GB of internal storage is fairly small but this can easily be expanded by using the microSD slot. Do remember though, to use the camera, you will need to add an SD card.

Although we are seeing handsets emerging with dual core chips, the Incredible S runs very smoothly with just the one. We found it coped perfectly well with more demanding tasks like watching video and playing games.

If processor speed is an important factor for you then it might be worth waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S II, Motorola Atrix or HTC Sensation handsets to come out.
