Samsung Galaxy S II hands-on review

Considerable upgrade from the Galaxy S
Thu Apr 14 2011, 17:07

THE FIRST THING we noticed about Samsung's latest smartphone when we picked it up at The Gadget Show this week was its weight. It is comfortable to hold considering its large screen size but feels worryingly light, which gives the impression of poor quality. But this is easily forgotten and makes other phones seem bulky.

samsung-galaxy-s-ii-andorid-smartphoneThe chassis of the phone is quite plasticky and seemed a bit fragile. We would expect more for our money in this case, with many competing phones coming with better build quality such as an aluminium uni-body.

The Galaxy S II has a 1.2GHz processor that is more than capable of the tasks it has to carry out. We found that browsing the Internet and watching videos were no problem for this smartphone. It can also seek through video in real time with ease and zoom in and out using the built-in gyro, a cool but unnecessary feature.

Navigation around the screens is reasonably easy on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but when compared with HTC's Sense overlay on Android the Samsung phone just doesn't compete on its user interface.

The 8MP camera on the phone produced great results with bright and sharp photos. The camera is also capable of recording high definition video.

The large 4.2-inch display uses Super AMOLED Plus technology, which we found impressive and lends itself to typing on the onscreen keyboard. The screen is bright, it's a great size for browsing the Internet and is well suited for watching videos.

From our initial look at the Galaxy S II, we'd say it is definitely a decent upgrade from the Galaxy S in a number of areas including the screen, processor, camera and weight. We'll bring you a full review of the handset soon. µ

I find this rather informative actually, the thing seems very light and possibly not sturdy enough, they camera seems pretty nice, it's snappy in operation.
I mean you have some usable info there, and info many in-depth articles don't even get to.

Worryingly light?

Sorry, had to post another comment about this article. Worryingly light? Really? If it's heavier, people rant about it being too hefty. But lighter, and you get the "impression of poor quality"? If this phone is thinner, faster, has a bigger, better screen, more powerful, as well as lighter, how is that at all bad?

Most phones are lighter than the Touch Pro 2, but I plan on upgrading to the Galaxy S2 and welcome the lightness it brings.

Great tech journalism!

Please enlighten your readers on how long you spent reviewing the SGS2 when you "picked it up" at the gadget show?

Lets get into tech journalism design benchmarks for a moment..

Macbook (insert model here)- thinner, faster and and lighter! A masterpiece!

Fondlepad2 - thinner, faster and lighter! Truly magical!

JudasPhone - mostly breakable glass with faulty antennae surround! Sexy aluminum!

SGS2 - thinner faster and lighter? worryingly light.

Where do you get your staff writers?

No Editorial process in place

How to I get a job here - there is not editorial control it seems for a weak as p!ss review. Ooh, its light weight....how many times have I read that about the original GalaxyS?? Plenty, but mine is not weak or fragile!

I want a white one

Review miscategorised, maybe hasty, but not worthless.

As a first impression it's adequate. On the processor, you want to be told, does stuff work, such as playing video? Yes it does. Thank you, it is what I wanted to know. As for 4.2 inches, I'd rate manufacturer's information below what a pocket ruler tells me, but they generally don't go to 2 decimals of the imperial measure. Slightly startling to be told the device is too light; the laudable urge to physically compress most manufactured computing devices means that they usually feel like, and are, pretty much solid slabs of metal and glass of whatever size they are, with an obvious implication for weight. Who knows, maybe a part-plastic shell bounces more safely when dropped. And one early 3G phone I heard of with metal casing quickly got too hot to hold comfortably just making a normal call. I suppose it keeps the bill down.

I'm happy with my Android 2.2 Galaxy Tab and I don't immediately see how HTC can improve on the useability, but I suppose you know what you're talking about.

The Most Negative Sounding Review

I must admit that this review (Joke) has been the most negative sounding review of SGS2 i have ever read. For the phone which deserves the best has been shown in such a bad way.. The writer should go back and learn some basics about writing an online review. This was my first and last time on this site.

It IS a decent upgrade.

It is lighter, has a slightly bigger screen, has a newer SAMOLED tech behind it, higher res camera (from 5 to 8mp), has LED flash this time, and is a dual core 1.2 Ghz (instead of 1 Ghz).

I would say that it definitely IS a decent upgrade. Not a MAJOR one, but the fact that this still has Gorilla Glass on it, should give reason to check it out.

The article IS a bit poor though.

I hate people that abuse this site but....

I've never understood why people come onto this site to make comments about how poor the articles are, but this article has made me realise it.

Useless is an understatement. Not for it's length. Not for it's lack of real detail or meaningful insight, but for the fact that one of it's most KEY features, the dual-core processor, hasn't even been mentioned!!!

BTW considering the extra size and hardware inside this compared to the Original Galaxy S, 3 grams IS a decent upgrade!!

Let's extract some useful stuff from this sh!t

Forget this preprepreview.

For US folks, you probably know Virgin Mobile offering now plans which include everything starting with amazing $25/month rates. Engadget wrote about that some weeks ago, and people were shocked. Specifically because Tmo destiny is not clear now.

Virgin, MetroPCS, Cricket or other small companies are way cheaper then other Big Four.

The only they do not have is nice high level phones. I suggest you write to the management and CC elso to Richard Branson and urge them to get such phones like SGS II, HTC Sensation, LG etc. In two-three years there will be no Big Four, but the Big Five and then, if he will rise the rates, just the one Big One LOL.

Do that now. I am dead seriousssss! Remember, eventually water eats iron. Also, worth to ask to betatest hightech phones with non-disclosed agreement, they may offer it to you.

3 Grams lighter is a big upgrade!

3 Grams lighter is a big upgrade! WTF?

What a joke a review...

I could have read the specs from GSM arena with no hands on use of the phone and come up with a better review.

Please try harder next time.

What the hell was that?

Underage kids should not be allowed to work. my 12-yr old brother could write a better article. whoever wrote this article is clearly in wrong profession. It will be tough to find a such useless review anywhere else. EVERYONE, do yourself a favor - if you are reading this close the browser.

Third Grade Article

Hey since when have tech retards been allowed to write articles. What a poor third grade write-up

I wouldn't call this a review

I definitely would not call this a review. More like a hands-on preview, and a bad one at that. A couple of the specs mentioned were off, such as the processor. It's a 1.2GHz 'dual core' processor, not single core, as it would seem from the article. And the screen is not 4.2 inches, it's 4.27 inches, but commonly referred to as a 4.3 inch screen. Aside from that, I also thought you could have gone more in depth, as this is called a hands on review.

Anywho, I'm just waiting for this phone to upgrade from my Touch Pro 2. Now, if only they had a version of the Galaxy S2 that had a hardware keyboard. Of course it would be a little thicker, but I love my keyboard and am gonna miss it.
