Thermaltake SpinQ and ISGC400 coolers tested

First INQpressions Thermaltake goes for the unusual
Saturday, 4 April 2009, 16:02

HOW MUCH CAN you innovate on a simple CPU heat sink, contrary to the popular boredom about the subject?

Thermaltake, one of the global leaders in cooling, thinks there's still a lot of room to do exactly that - here we had a look at their two brand new, six-heat-piped (should we call it "heat-pipe six pack"?) heat sink and fan combos, SpinQ and ISGC400.

Therm

SpinQ is the prettier one of the two, in fact it's one of the most visually attractive CPU heat sink designs ever, almost like a display shelf accessory - no wonder it won Red.Dot Design Award recently.

Its small 80mm 1,600 rpm fan is no match for the 120mm entry on the cheaper-looking ISGC400 though. Also, the latter unit, even though it comes with a slower-spinning, silent 1,300 rpm fan, can have that fan easily replaced by any faster 120mm unit, up to 3,000rpm and above if you wish. Its simple in design-  easy to pull out and replace -  is a plus too.

Fan             Default         Turbo

SpinQ           35.7 C          49.2 C
ISGC            35.9 C          49.6 C

Well, OK, it does seem that, despite smaller fan, SpinQ has a hairline advantage here. Both heat sinks provide sufficiently good performance to run this baby at 4.5 GHz anyway. If you put a much faster fan on ISGC400, you might be able to do even more.

Good A choice of good looks or easy mod
Bad: A 120 mm dual-fan SpinQ is hoped for, if possible
Ugly:  ISGC is less pretty than SpinQ, obviously

wtf was that?

Is that a review or a spin to promoting PR crap? Those two sinks have been available for quite some time now, and by no means the best of the lot. The only quantifiable thing you mention is the number of heat pipes- which are NOT exactly true heat pipes to start with- makes you look like a dou-che. Please stop doing product reviews when you don't know how to. Is INQ in someway linked to Thermaltake? I suspect so. Just last month Charlie was bragging about take's "unique OMGBBQ!!!" case, the ugliest piece of engineering ever, and now this. I guess you've never heard about Thermalright...

Huh?

Which is which? The only clue you give is that you think the the SpinQ is "prettier". They both look equally plain to me. Is the one on the left the one you name first?

@Mike Green

The different sizes of the fan on the pictures didn't do it for ya? How thick can you get?
I quote:

Reading is an underrated art indeed.

Moar

Still not much of a review though, whats the Delta of the coolers for a start, or how many watts of heat were you pumping into the thing and what were ambient temps to give those results?

Awful

"Also, the latter unit, even though it comes with a slower-spinning, silent 1,300 rpm fan, can have that fan easily replaced by any faster 120mm unit, up to 3,000rpm and above if you wish"

This is the worst heatsink review I have ever seen. How do you still have a job? I wouldn't let you mow my lawn.
