Intel tries to backstop its own roadmaps - Bob Colwell, former Intel chief architect
RECENTLY WE RAN both the reference and Asus design flavours of the HD4870X2 dual GPU card on the Intel Core i7 desktop. The newest Catalyst driver, the 8.12 version from two weeks ago, was rumoured to give problems when running a CrossfireX setup. So, we put the two cards, the hot AMD reference and noticeably cooler Asus version – both at the same clocks – together on the Asus P6T Deluxe Nehalem mobo, to see what happens when running the 3Dmark Vantage.
For those who ask "why Asus" well we will test Gigabyte and MSI boards as well, when the respective vendors finally bother sending them over - which they hadn't at press time.

Here are the results vs a single card, in both Performance mode at 1280x1024, and Extreme Mode at 1920x1200 with all the bells & whistles turned on:
Performance Single Card

Performance Dual Cards

Extreme Single Card

More to come later this month: let's see how the next Catalyst driver, due in some ten days from now, handles the scaling. µ
Told ya so!

Obviously impressive, as will be the dual GPU GTX from Nvidia in SLI. But spending £700+ on a graphics solution that'll take as much power as your washing machine on full spin? Umm, sanity anyone. One 4870X2 or one GTX 280X2 is quite enough, especially with a Nehalem.
Lay off the crack Crusty.
I want one of these setups as soon as I get my power station I will need to juice it.
Asus products while initially impressive are TOTAL CRAP! Why? Simply put they don't stand by their products, flood the market at all levels to maximize the number of products sold, and when you realize that you've been had with something that doesn't work they send you a USED and BROKEN part to replace a $300+ new part. I'll never buy ASUS for myself or my clients ever again!
