Notebook disk is dull, if effective

WESTERN DIGITAL may have come to the 2.5in hard disk party later than most of the other players in the notebook drive market, but they are making up for lost time.

The latest drive to join the Scorpio product range is the WD1200BEVS which, surprise surprise, is a 120GB drive, scribbles Simon Crisp on the back of a fag packet

The drive has a Sata 150 interface (there's an ATA/100 version as well, the WD1200VE) and uses two discs to achieve its capacity.

Completing the feature list is a 5,400rpm spin speed, 8MB buffer (cache), and a quoted 12ms read seek time.

It also features WD's Shockguard technology which protects the mechanics and disc surfaces from shock and Durastep Ramp which locks the heads away from the discs when the drive is not in use.
