We figured out that many people would like to know the difference between these CPUs and whether it's worth it to go from a single core to dual core and from a single core FX to a multi core one.
Yeah, we realise that not everyone has a Gainward BLISS 7950 GX2 so we decided to give it a try in the $130 $150 range with an Albatron 7600 GT.
Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe NVIDIA nForce 5 590 SLI motherboard
Let me tell you a few things about the tested CPUs. A single core FX57 was the fastest in the test. It is based on a 2800MHz clocked San Diego socket 939 core. It is a 90 nanometre CPU that works at 1.4V. It has 1MB of cache memory. In our case HTT worked at 200.9MHz but we got it up to 2812.9MHz.
The Athlon FX57
The second on test was the first dual core to come. It is branded as Athlon 64 X2 4800+. It has two cores each powered with 1 MB cache memory and works at socket 939 motherboards. You need 1.3 V to power this dual core CPU and it is based on Toledo core. It works at 2400 MHz with HT 200 times 12 multiplier. In Asus A8N32 SLI board it worked at 2411.00 MHz.
The Athlon 64 4800+
The last to be tested was the FX62, the first to use socket AM2. Athlon FX 62 is clocked at 2800 MHz and has a 14
multiplier. It is also build at 90 nanometre process and uses Windsor core. Just as the FX57, this CPU got the
frequency from HTT 200 MHz and multipliler 14. We tested this CPU on Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe NVIDIA nForce 5 590 SLI
motherboard.
The Athlon 64 4800+
We ran a bunch of gaming and CPU tests to see how big the difference is between the CPUs. We also picked up the
fastest memory that we had in the lab at test time. We used 2x1024 MB DDR Corsair XMS-3500LL PRO memory for DDR one
socket 939 machine and 2x1024 MB DDR2 Corsair CM2X1024-6400C3 memory for socket AM2 DDR 2 machine.

We started with 3Dmark03 and you can see that this test like the CPU frequency. Dual core at two times 2.4 GHz is the slowest and scores some 130 marks less than FX57 clocked at 2..8 GHz. The frequency beat the dual core at least in this test. AM2 based FX62 clocked at 2.8 GHz leads with 400 points difference. In this case, dual core counts. But if you compare these two CPUs clocked at the same frequency, you will see that there in only three per cent difference.
Then we ran the same test with Geforce 7950 GX2 graphic card. You get more than double performance increase and 2.4 GHz clocked 4800+ scores 15500 faster than the same CPU with 7600 GT. This is a huge jump with just a graphic card upgrade. It is interesting that FX57 and 4800+ scores almost the same and FX57 is 15300 marks faster with GX2 card. AM2 based FX62 scores 14200 marks more with 7950 GX2 card and if we compared the frames in Game 2 you clearly see that this card runs 150 FPS faster than the 7600 GT and is 160 per cent faster. That is something. Dual core FX62 is 1200 marks faster than FX57. We are talking about four per cent difference.
It is interesting to note that the GX2 is slower in the CPU test as this dual core card needs more CPU power but this didn't affect the games. Athlon FX57 is 50 marks faster in 3Dmark05 from 4800+ while the AM2 DDR 2 based FX62 only 100 marks faster. The CPU didn't change the score much again the biggest difference is three percent.
The Gainward 7950 GX2 is twice as fast as a 7600 GT card. FX57 is again slightly faster than 4800+ but for just 200 marks. Dual core FX62 1500 marks difference. This time we are talking about twelve FPS difference when you upgrade from the slowest 4800+ to FX62, a first noticeable difference.
The games runs almost ninety percent fastest on a GX2 based card. Composite figures are very tight as they are graphic dependent.
3Dmark06 know some dual core optimisations. Athlon FX57 is for the first time the slowest CPU. It loses by 220 from the dual core 4800+. Interestingly enough even much faster dual core DDR 2 AM2 king, FX62 scores only 50 points more. The fastest FX62 is only one and a half per cent faster than the slowest FX57. The difference gets bigger with the GX2 card. The GX2 scores 140 per cent better score than a 7600 GT. Your score jumps by more than 100 per cent, a hundred and forty to be precise.
The shader model 2.0 test doesn't benefit at all from the CPU upgrade and scores almost identical at all CPUs and same goes for Shader model 3.0/HDR test. Only the CPU test gains a bit but it's nothing to get excited about.
We moved to a PCmark05 to see if the complete system benefits from a new graphic card or a new CPU. The CPU test likes dual core 4800+ who scores 800 marks faster than FX57 while FX62 ends up 800 marks faster than the second placed. In memory testing obviously FX62 and its super fast DDR2 memory wins over the competition by 1600 MB/s difference. FX 57 the fastest from two 939 CPU's scores nine percent more with faster single core CPU. Hard drive scores almost the same at all CPU's while the FX57 is the slowest in overall score and loses from 4800+ by 600 marks and 1500 from the FX62.
The same ratio remains at machines powered by Gainward 7950 GX2 card. PC mark04 the good old one showed the same picture and ratio with an exception that we could not get the final score at FX62 with both cards.
We tested two Sandra tests and lets start with latest one. Sandra 2007 really likes dual core and 4800+ leaves FX57 in dust as it runs some seventy five percent faster. FX 62 a dual core variation of FX57 single core scores twice as much but unfortunately only in theory and maybe rendering. Memory score dominates at AM2 where Corsair scores 8590 some seventy three percent faster than the single core DDR one based FX57. Multimedia also dominates on dual cores.
Sandra 2005 shows the similar picture. AM2 based DDR 2 machine runs almost twice faster in CPU and multimedia score than a single core FX57. The FX57 loses massively on CPU and multimedia test but wins at memory benchmarks at least versus 4800+.
Cinebench is a nice rendering test and can use one or two CPU's. When it comes to a single core rendering FX57 and FX62 are almost identical with a single second difference, the graphic card doesn't matter here. 4800+ is the slowest but it beats FX57 in dual core testing as the second scores zero, as it has a single core only. It can do the same job in 33 seconds while FX57 needs 54 for the same job. FX62 is the fastest. C4D Shading is fastest on FX62 but only by a few point and FX57 performing almost the same. 4800+ falls behind. OpenGL SW-L is slowest on 4800+ and fastest at FX62. OpenGL HW-L is fastest at FX57 then comes a dual core FX62 at 2800 MHz and last is 4800+ at 2400 MHz. 7950GX2 is drascicaly slower in this test than the 7600 GT. And FX57 both time wins in OpenGL speed up test.
Science mark is really tight at FX57 vs 4800+ with a slight advantage at a single core, faster clocked FX57. FX62 still holds the crown in this test and in some tests such as stream it is almost twice faser than the DDR one based 4800+ and FX57. The science likes a higher memory bandwidth at high frequency dual cores.
Athlon FX57 is faster than 4800+ in audio encoding and does the same job almost 20 seconds faster. Dual core CPU is just two seconds faster than the same clocked single core FX57. I guess we need a codec that can take an advantage of dual core.
Even our Video codec chose the frequency over the dual core. FX57 wins versus 4800+ by some five minutes and FX62 with dual cores clocked at the same FX 57 frequency is only one minute faster.
And now lets see what we gain in games with a different CPU or graphic card. Doom 3 really likes FX62 and scores 20 frames faster at CPU limited 10x7 resolution. The same CPU scores more than twice as much with a7950 GX2 card. 7950 GX2 card also benefits from a faster CPU and can push some 20+ FPS more or some twenty five percent.
Doom 3 with FSAA and Aniso is graphically limited and the different CPU wont affect the score with Albatron 7600 GT. But Geforce 7950 GX2 really benefits from a new CPU. You can gain 20+ frames or twenty five per cent faster score with a faster CPU.
Far Cry 4X FSAA and 8X Aniso is graphically limited with 7600 GT but scores fifteen frames or more on average, and this is what you get with CPU upgrade. We are talking about twenty percent performance increase with a new faster CPU.
Half Life 2 with 7600 GT gains up to ten FPS with first lowest resolutions but not at two highest. FX57 and FX62 scores almost the same at all resolutions.
Half Life 2 4X FSAA and 8X Aniso is graphic card bounded with 7600 GT. The difference again comes with a fastest card but again only at first two resolutions.
Quake 4 even with 7600 GT gains in a huge frame difference from a 4800+ to FX62. It runs 25 FPS at 10x7 faster and thirteen at 12x10 but almost nothing at two top resolutions, again a twenty percent difference.
In Quake 4 4X FSAA and Aniso 8X, Geforce 7950 GX2 gains as well some twenty percent increase but this time at every resolutions. FEAR with 7600 GT doesn't show any difference on a different CPUs. Gainward 7950 GX2 scores 21 FPS, more than twenty per cent at the two lowest resolutions and almost nothing at higher ones, it even loses by a frame to the much cheaper 4800+.
Fear with 4X FSAA and 16X Aniso shows the same picture. The score is identical at 7600 GT at all CPU's and machines. 7950 GX gains some 20+ per cent at first resolution and less than eight per cent at 12x10. There is no benefit at all at higher resolutions.
Battlefield 2 really likes the fast CPU's but it doesn't care much about dual core. FX57 is almost always identical to FX62 performance and up to eighty six per cent faster than the 4800+. Now this is a huge difference. 7950 GX2 shows a different picture. Now FX57 is just slightly faster than 4800+ while the FX62 is dominant and on average twenty percent faster. At 20x15 FX62 is thirty seven percent faster than both FX57 and 4800+.
Battlefield 2 4X FSAA and 8X Aniso likes the performance but not with the 7600 GT card. With 7950 GX2 there is twenty frames, twenty per cent as well difference at 10x7 and 12x10, twelve per cent at 16x12 and only three FPS or three and a half per cent.
Serious Sam 2 with 7600 GT is always graphic limited and gives almost the same scores at all resolutions. Well, the 7950 GX2 doesn't. At 10x7, 12x10 and 16x12 7950 GX2 again gains twenty percent from a faster core. At 20x15 the FX62 is only five per cent faster.
Serious Sam 2 FSAA 4X and Aniso 16X is just slightly faster on FX62. We are again talking about less then four percent, closer to three. At first resolution 7950 GX2 scores twenty percent faster, at second it is fifteen percent faster, six percent at 16x12 and five percent at 20x15.
In Short
Synthetic tests really like the dual core and if you have the right codec you can encode the music and video
much faster. It will also render faster but it won't be significantly faster in games and some other applications.
Multitasking works fine at FX57 but it suppose to run better on a dual core 4800+ or FX62, I could not notice that.
In gaming there is a performance increase with fastest graphic cards. If you have a mainstream card such as 7600 GT you won't gain much from a faster CPU.
More CPU power you have the faster the card will be. This certainly applies to Geforce 7950 GX2 or faster cards. In most cases single core matches dual core performance but in games it can be up to twenty percent difference. Maybe at some super doper multi tasking or mega tasking what ATI preaches for its 4x4 platformance dual core counts more than a single one, but these scenarios are for people who play two instances of games as a single core can handle team speak, Skype and a game, even couple words, mail client and an Adobe reader, I tried it today and it worked great as long as you have enough memory.
Price difference still dictates that single cores are good things and are here to stay especially if you are the on who has the overclocked 3000+ to 4800+ speeds. The real 4800+ costs around $ / 300 at press time and is a good choice. It also comes for the similar price at socket AM2.
Both FX57 is an old news but it should be available on Ebay for around 500 or less. The Athlon FX62 costs around $ 700 at press time and it is the fastest but the most expensive.
Dual core is anyway a safer way to go and it is the way to go, whether you like it or you like it not. ?
