A STRONG east wind swept through here on the weekend, whipping the fir trees around and scouring the leftover dead leaves off the ground, up and away into a brilliant blue sky.
Even stronger financial winds blowing out of the US through the world's economy threaten to push prosperity into a ditch, and the IT industry with it, from which it might not recover.
A continent further to the east in Washington DC, a failed and despised US President Bush, together with his sneering puppet-master and most of the venal and incompetent satraps of their disastrous administration, packed up and left the White House and US federal offices.
The administration's last White House press conference had been held last week in front of a smattering of bored traditional media stenographers, with many empty seats occupied at the last minute by interns pressed in to fill them for the television cameras.
Then Dubya stumbled through his last speech as President, just as smirking and shifty-eyed in his moronic cluelessness as he was upon entering office eight long nightmare years ago. He mouthed a few of the same tired lies for a few minutes, then shambled off to the nearly universal relief of everyone who bothered to watch, his failed presidency hanging upon him like an albatross, while the multiple catastrophes he created lingered like a bad smell.
Over the weekend, as near-hurricane force winds swept the city here in the Northwest, the crews of cleaners and painters moved through the White House, opening the windows and working to prepare the mansion for its next family, that of President-Elect Barack Obama.
The US federal government all but shut down last weekend and through yesterday's holiday, held to celebrate the birthday of the martyred black civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jnr.
And at long last today, before a jubilant crowd gathered before the steps of the US Congress and expected to number in the millions, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.
This day has been a long time, far too long, in coming, and for the US, and for all the rest of the world as well, it will not be regarded as a moment too soon.
So at noon today, US Eastern Standard Time, the entire IT industry should simply stop for a moment to appreciate that US President Barack Obama's inauguration at last presents us with hope for policy changes and other actions that might lead to economic recovery.
The sky is still bright blue today, and the chill winter air smells of hope for change like a fresh breeze. µ
How a journalist could be so stupid and ignorant to suggest that Obama's idiotic economic plan is going to somehow rescue everyone is beyond me. He is going to emulate what was done in the 1930's. Sop we are about to repeat history and turn a recession into a 10 year great depression like the one that FDR gave us. So typical of today's low quality media which portrays today's 7% unemployment as some sort of great depression with soup lines. Well great depression is what we are going to end up with if only half of Obama's plans get implemented. I suggest that Egan take econ 101 before posting anything about the economy. Idiot!
Good article all the way up until you started praising Obama who has yet to prove himself. Do you not realise his VP elect is a music maffia henchman?
The Americans I watched on CNN seemed to see this as the fall of a Tyrant and what he stood for. As the people reclaiming their government from oppressors and evil coporations. As a chance to restablish freedom and individual self esteem.......lets see if they are correct in their hopes.
Cast your minds back to 'Things can only get better'. Discredited (Tory) government sent packing, new saintly rescuer T. Bliar rides in to rescue us all. Fast forward to er.. today and look where the Bliar and his pathetic henchman Broon have got us; then think very carefully before praising Obama to the skies.
The idiot that penned this article knows nothing! YOUR ABOUT TO FALL OVER, YOU LEAN SO FAR TO THE LEFT! I like Obama. But he cant save what cant be saved. And we are already getting use to socialism. And remember this Mr. Journo: Its better to remain silent and be thought of a fool; than to speak up and remove all doubt.
I'm sure Obama will put the USA in a better financial climate.
Just like Clinton did before him.
Let us thank the Lord that the morron called Bush is gone.
Anybody will do better then him, even a 5 year old.
Hail Obama...I'm sure he will do great.
So, the Messiah will help us borrow ourselves into prosperity, eh?
Once again, the Inq. has proven that they have zero expertise outside of IT - and little enough there.
If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter. [George Washington]
Don't listen to the whiners Egan. Anyone who thinks Obama was not the right person for the job knows nothing about politics anyways. Today we are officially no longer our own self contained reality; today America is officially part of the rest of the world, and it feels great! Your writing was excellent, and it is completely capturing the national mood today.
America was never gone. Only some of the non believers such as yourself!
And tomorrow (3 months from now, a year, 4 years, whenever) when people wake up and realise that things did not magically become better overnight and hate the new boss as much as they hated the old boss, who will you blame then?
Trying to impress people? And failing miserably? Again?
Yes Mr. Obama is a talented, energetic, and well spoken young man. He is not God, The Messiah, or Deliverance From Evil. He's from Chicago for crying out loud, where machine politics and manipulating the system are an art form.
If you want to subscribe to the Cult Of Personality, that's your business. Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot, Mr. Assad, Mr. Putin, Mr. Ahmahdinijad, Mr. Mugabe, Mr. Kim Jong-il, and Mr. Ali Khamenei would all not just approve, but insist.
The USA is still gone for the rest of the world.
Obama has to show that the USA can come back and be trusted again.
We all look forward to a change in direction of the USA and Obama has to show it.
If he fails, doubt it personally, but if he fails it will be an even bigger disaster for the USA then Bush created.
Bush called Europe the Enemy, he declared war on any country that put an American on trial!
He made enemies with Russia, the Middle east...heck did he stay friends with anything at all?
Obama is USAs last hope to be trusted ever again....as you sure fucked up!
it's going to get worse before it gets worse. well, it was a nice article anyway.
Anyone with a brain knows we won't recover overnight. However can't you help but acknowledge that the new president has given something that seemed lost to the nation, inspiration and hope.
You see, we have been a scared little nation for a while now. It has been so long that a lot of people can't even recognize it anymore. Even worse, every time we tried to wake up from this slumber the Administration was more than happy to mention 9/11 & terrorism to scare us into obedience.
No more.
That is the message here. We can grow past our fear and hope for something better. Idealistic? Perhaps it is, but without ideals, hopes, and dreams, what remains of us?
Obama will certainly have his hands full. In fact I don't envy him. However, I do think we needed an inspirational figure and someone that seem to genuinely want to work for us instead of above us.
As for the economics of it, may I remind you all the borrowing started with the previous administration? The United Staes has been running on empty for years now and has been borrowing to pay for the wars. It was only a matter of time before it came back to haunt us.
Now we need to buckle up, tighten our pants, and work hard to get out this jam we put ourselves into.

Obama is a thousand times a better man than Bush could ever be, but don't pin too many hopes on him.
He is an excellent preacher...sorry, I mean orator... but don't get to got up in his aural Olympics.
A President only has so much power and the US currently has a intense destructive inertia that will be dragging it down much further and lower before it comes any closer to getting out of the nose dive that it is in.
Too many criminals have been pillaging for far too long for there to be only brief repercussions. The entire country has been mugged.
It's funny to note that Someone with a Clue states that Egan needs to go to economy 101, as he needs to go back to rudimentary History. FDR did not cause the great depression you twit, that started as early as 1929 in places. FDR didn't beome president until 1933. Hoover was president during the starting years of the Great Depression and this is were the term Hooverville comes from, as in the shanty towns of people who had become homeless during the Great Depression. It's people like you who subscribe to revisionist history that makes most US citizens a laughing stock of the rest of the world. Well, that and our arrogance while traveling abroad. It doesn't matter whether you are republican or democratic, or independant, you can still hope that the new office will better the current situation in the USA, and hopefuly our stance with the rest of the world.
Another clueless journalist with head stuck up Obama's ASS! LOL
But I will not as a conservative do what the liberals did to Bush.... which is sabotage their President AND country in the name of politics! The liberal's literally hoped our Country failed, thus Bush would fail, because they could not fathom the idea of Bush being successful!
I hope Obama succeeds, because if he does, our Country will do well! I won't stoop to the lows of the liberals and their head-up-ass press corp!
My observation is that many people in America are desperately looking for a miracle worker and they fully expect Obama to be that person.
The reality is neither Obama or any other president is a miracle worker. In America Congress and the president pander to the public to get elected and re-elected by making promises they never plan to keep. This is the norm for most politicians. Americans as a group are very naive.
The sad reality is that the world is in an economic recession and falling fast. The U.S. is probably six months ahead of the rest of the world in the crash. Obama and friends on Capitol Hill didn't even know the country was in a recession for over 12 months until they got a memo in Dec. '08 None of these politicians has any clue how to create permanent U.S. jobs to build a stable economy. Instead they plan to throw $850 Billion at welfare programs and drive up the national debt. This will just extend the economic depression to a full decade or more.
So while some in America are celebrating today as a new "hope", many are wishing the cronies on Capitol Hill could buy a clue. Unfortunately this is unlikely so we all might as well bend over and kiss our arse goodbye because the worldwide depression is going to be long and painful.
Are you kidding me? I'm not exactly a supporter of Bush, and I more often disagree with him. However, I miss the days of real journalism. I don't care if people in the media are biased one way or another, but for god’s sake do your job! Report the facts and keep your narrow minded opinion out of the news. Even though I do agree with some of your personal thoughts, be a reporter and keep things more balanced.
What opinion? I am not great fan of Bush, but all I saw written up was hate and loathing. There are other places I can get news and opinion on the IT business. INQ, clean up your act.
You, sir, are a moron. You call yourself a conservative--like so many other modern "republicans"...and yet you back George Bush. Do you even know what "conservative" means? I suggest you look it up. There is nothing conservative about an administration that expanded government more than any administration that preceded it. Are you a fan of FDR? Because your man did more to increase the size and scope of government than he did.
Not a fan of the Constitution are you? Because YOUR President seems to have considered it a rather pesky document--which he shooed away like an insect. Some American. Wave the flag while you piss on the Constitution...
Obama may not be our savior--but he can hardly do worse.
I want what this guy's smoking!
Weak minds tend to think alike, You my friends are almost all blind.
I love your adjectives. I can tell you have no bias what-so-ever.
So please, continue to wear your black turtle-neck, sipping Chi Tea basking in your own genius as you marvel how intelligent you are and how stupid 64 million Americans are for voting GW into office. We'll continue to do what we do, and you continue to hit your neo-socialist gravity bong, trust me pal you need some more.
By the way . . .your thought process reminds me more of a frenchman than a Brit, perhaps you are on the wrong side of the channel?
I mean, really? Does anyone really believe this? Really? No, really?
My posting code is FAGBYM, which is clearly amusing.
My god, what the heck is all this fighting back and forth going on between fellow Americans here in the comments section? Seriously, the election's over! It's not really the time to keep going on about how "elitist" or socialist or chai-drinking Obama is.
And really, just stop the projecting; no one wanted Bush to fail - we lament his failures. I don't care how deep down redneck you are; you don't want Obama to fail. If he does, YOU will suffer. Yes, you (the middle class, any and all of you). I want Obama to succeed for the same reasons I'm sad Bush did not: because whatever he does affects me directly. Our economy and our standing in the world is just to fragile to afford any more screwups, end of story.
My fellow deluded Americans and foreigners who think Obama is the messiah incarnate are wrong. He is leading the very same groups of cronies and scoundrels that he himself was a member as a senator. As soon as the socialistic and racial equlity haze clears from the misconception that higher taxes and nationalization will pay one's bills, people will see what their history has brought them. Instead of welcoming Obama's first term we should really be relishing this as a train wreck waiting to happen and call it what it is.... Jimmy Carter's second term... Welcom back Carter.
Dear Author... You must live a blissful life. Your ignorance on American politics and how center-right the United States it show in your disgraceful article. Come on Inq. please stick to your great articles on Tech stuff not politics.
Dude. Who gives a shit.
Encourage people to be self reliant. Not reliant on the latest and greatest fad, political or otherwise. :/
I have this understanding that Obama is a fraud.
139,759,334 people in this country, that is 46% (at the least) also thought so.
Wow, so many hurt Republican's have responded to your article, clearly pained by today and the prior election. To those of you who are so very hurt, I'm so sorry your president has run this country into the ground, I'm so sorry your God really wasn't on "our" side, and I'm so sorry I'm going to be silently pitying you for your blindness. Yours is a believe system of hate, fear, and self-interest. A belief system that must die for the good of this planet.
May God bless everyone on this planet.
Although I can understand some skepticism about Obamas ability I cannot understand why so many people that have posted they're comments seem to genuinely want him to fail. Almost as if you are waiting for him to screw things up just so you can say "ha! told you so!" Whats going on here people? Dont you want your president to do well? Hes here to stay for at least 4 years you know...
This was an IT news site?
As such it was quite interesting.
The White House has an officious website covering Bush's last days in office. www.whitehouse.org
If you are a true Republican, you must not miss this one.
As an illustration of how the US matters less and less to the world's GDP: <http://blogs.zdnet.com/ITFacts/?p=15390> -- netbooks are the fastest-growing sector of the PC market right now, and the US contributed less than 10% of that.
The U.S of A holes is the scum of the earth. Atleast Obama would be hard pressed to do any worse than Bush. And LOL at all the redneck nazi americunt comments.
I love how Egan and every single commenter failed to address in any meaningful way the impact this is going to have on the IT industry and technology as a whole. Net neutrality, DMCA, FCC, infrastructure investments, the potential implications are huge.
And who put Bush in the Whitehouse ....twice??? Now the godlike Obama cries change!!!! and the ignorant yanks lap it up. Iraq will become the new Vietnam but who cares...in due time they will also have McDonalds. Obama will become their hero because they need one. Personally I would like to see Arnie there one day. In his camo painted NOTsoWhitehouse. At least that would be entertaining. Is it not funny that anything in the states can be justified in the name of patriotism. It is true ...ignorance is bliss.
Did you live in France during the Mitterrand Period? If not then how do you know?
Just another brainwashed and brainless herd member who believes what he's told but maintains the illusion that his mind is free.
Modern propaganda is truly an amazing thing.

I am a French national, born in France from French parents. I am an expat since 1999. So yes, I've seen how Mitterrand's policies turned my country into a shitty little country (to paraphrase one of our ambassador commenting on Israel). I can also see a direct parallel with Obama’s election. To tell you they indeed are on the same wavelength, Ségolène Royal even claims Obama copied all her campaign ideas. Google for it if you do not trust me.
You're damn right. But if I may add, "The Inquirer" is unfortunately following "The Register" on the road to mediocrity. If you look back at it, both publication started political opinion columns after Mike Magee left. I do not know why they think their political opinion matters so much, on a site whose focus is supposed to be IT. As you mentioned, there is a link between the two that could have been exploited, but what do you expect from a short-sighted journalist?
And it was great growing up in Montparnasse during that time. I am also an Ancien Combattant et Blesse de Guerre sent to war by Mitterrand. It was still a time when we thought about each other and social solidarity....a time of hope and protection from corporate powers. Now France has mistakenly elected a Bush Follower but at least our public stands up and says "NON" when he goes too far.
America (the world) has to fundamentally change from the ground up and from the inside out. Obama may or may not achieve this but at least he is the first hope in my lifetime of this happening.
A Gentleman admits when he has made a mistake: I apologize for the comments I made about you and your post.
Je ne vous contredirai pas, et si vous trouvez ca (pas de cédille sur mon clavier allemand) bien d'être un produit de la dégénération Mitterrand, libre à vous. I'd be curious to know in which way Sarkosy is a Bush follower. Did he send troops to Irak (btw, how does it feel to have fought a war for Dubya's father? Or what war are you talking about?). Sarkosy is just another socialist in disguise (or explain me what his "politique d'ouverture" means). That the French oppose a clear "non" to Sarkozy is a big joke (unless you're talking about the self-represented minority of unions and other extreme-left loonies): our people are like sheeps.
May be it was great to grow up in Montparnasse back then (Paris is not France), but do you think it is nice now?
Grosses Bises, mon colon
...even if I do not quite understand why you should apologize. Sorry about the cross-posting which make me look more arrogant than I am (after all, I'm French).
Obama is giving American's back some pride. He will encourage people from all races that they too can achieve, be respected and accepted. He can bring people together. Whenever that has happened in the past that leader hasn't lasted very long.
We're so screwed it's not even funny. I guess we gotta hit rock bottom to appreciate what we had. All you stupid Bush bashers will soon have a real reason to bash somebody. And it will be yourselves for letting this no-talent clown in office. This dude is gonna fail and fail big time.
I almost cry when I read these posts.
The attitudes that Americans have is "What is the government going to do about it".
The rot that is ingrown in the American economy is a direct result of how the ordinary American handles his/her lifestyle.
When things turn to shit, then they like to blame the political party in power and all of a sudden there is a new hero elected to make thing right.
WAKE UP FOLKS ...... it is your problem ..... it is created by you the individual ...... it has almost nothing to do with who is in power.
It makes almost no difference as to who is in power. The attitude and expectations that the average American has, has to change to a more realistic level.
The real tragedy is that the rot that has ingrained itself so deeply into the once proud American people is exactly the same as in the people in my country (Australia).
Tragically the world will not be so lucky as to ONLY have a RECESSION.
Hang on to your hats as the coming GLOBAL DEPRESSION is going to be a very bumpy ride, no matter who is in power as your president.
The bigotry expressed by Mr. Obama in his Coronation was outrageous... I don't think he could have been more divisive if he tried.
Mr. Obama is going to live to regret the hate he spewed in his inauguration speech. We'll see how he deals with an economic depression lasting a decade, with the next terrorist attacks on America, with the loss of people's jobs, retirement, homes and lives. We'll see how long Americans tolerate inaction, poverty, despair, increased taxes and unemployment when they are standing in bread and soup lines.
He clearly demonstrated his disgraceful bigotry by turning the Presidential inauguration into a $150 Million "race based" Coronation that alienated many and will forever haunt this con artist. That is Mr. Obama's definition of responsibility!
The office of the Presidency of the U.S. is not and shall not be about one race, religion or personal ideology. The President and Congressional members are elected to represent all Americans regardless of race, color or religion.
@Richard wake up dude! Bush & Co. blew up the 9/11 towers (there are very strong arguments supporting that theory in the Zeitgeist documentary movie), yet you elected him again! Seen any political responsibility from him lately? Many europeans find disturbing similarities between Bush and a pupet monkey.
Same as Medvedev but only with different organizations pulling the strings. No one around here respected him as a president. However I find Obama's election quite disturbing too. I don't say he wasn't the right choice. It's just that I found all the other presidential candidates, americans had to choose from, suspiciously disappointing. As if even the republicans wanted Obama to win (c'mon - promoting a mummy for a president?)
Now I can quit my job and go on welfare, and be RICH! I only need some of you "morons" out there to continue working, to support me. Just because I'm poor doesn't mean I have to live poor!
