Sony PS3 gets jailbroken to run Linux
Hell hath no fury like an angry open sourceror

WHEN THE GAMES CONSOLE MAKER Sony decided to stop people from running Linux on its Playstation 3 it made a lot of open sourcerors quite angry.

It also killed off a growing industry among those who were wiring PS3s together to make themselves some rather natty supercomputer clusters.

Now it seems that someone has come up with a clever idea that allows you to run Linux on your PS3 without voiding the warranty.

According to PSX Scene a bunch of open source hardware hackers have released a dongle called PS Jailbreak that will turn the PS3 back into a Linux machine.

The FAT32 file system is currently supported and they are working on NTFS. It works on current firmware but the dongle is fully updatable. It also allows ordinary online game play.

Basically it is a USB device with an easy to use installer and GUI that disables forced software updates and does not brick the console. It supports all regions: USA, JAP, PAL and KOREA.

It also allows you to backup games to the internal hard drive or an external hard drive through USB, and boot them directly from the GUI. This means you do not need an expensive Blue-ray burner and disks.

You can see a bit more about this here. µ

See F-Secure post at: http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00002014.html

In other words. it drops a backdoor, detected as Trojan:W32/Agent.DLEN (md5 e3e03501c795a6cc4c53df2619cadd4b).
