Sony apologises for PS3 firmware upgrade glitch
Move along, nothing to see here

FLAKEY FIRMWARE BUILDER Sony has been forced to apologise after killing a bunch of its customers PS3's with a dodgy version upgrade.

A fairly innocuous firmware update designed to add some simple video recommendation features to the Playstation Store caused the problem, it seems.

Fanbois updating to firmware version 3.41 on 27 July reported crashes, bangs and wallops. and even the PS3's feared Yellow Light of Death reportedly put in an appearance.

"For those users who are replacing the PS3 hard disk drive: we are aware of the symptoms with the system software update 3.41, released on July 27," said Sony blog manager James Gallagher.

"It will cause the update to stop in some occasions while replacing the PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) if the PS3 system is installed with version 3.41."

The Sony firmware team went on to Plan B, releasing a modified 3.41 update yesterday.

"To resolve these symptoms, we have released a new version of system software update 3.41 with a very minor change (the version number does not change) on August 2."

"If you are experiencing such symptoms when replacing the HDD of your PS3 system, we kindly ask you to use the latest data and try again. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding and continued support"

Sony has had more PS3 firmware tomfoolery than any other console vendor you might care to mention. Well, all two of ‘em. Earlier this year Sony dropped the "install any other OS" feature, thus alienating all of its Linux modders in one fell swoop.

Sony's senior director of corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold said that the giant company dropping Linux was "due to security concerns."

The 3.21 upgrade was not optional and Sony killed the ability to game on its Playstation Network for fanbois who didn't install the updated firmware.

We reported at the end of April that a Linux user filed a lawsuit against Sony for dropping Linux support. We haven't heard anything else on the case yet but Sony might have just made a few more Xbox 360 converts. µ

PS3 died also

Im very angry that after seeing other users have also experienced their PS3's yellow light of death after updating, that sony won't replace them for less than £130, it should be free as it is their fault. Any ideas on how to complain and try get sony to replace??

Fanboi?!

I agree with BP. Why am I a "fanboi" just because I own a PS3?

My ps3 died

My Ps3 died straight after this update! So I had to shell out £130 for a replacement! They said the update and the fact my PS3 died was just a coincidence.

BA!

Who?

Fanbois? Really? That's what you call every PS3 owner? How cliche and juvenile.

Yes, there are plenty of fanboYs out there; but some of us just like to watch BR movies and stream media.

So, kindly get a life and, perhaps, a writing style of your own.

What about model's totally bricked by the update?

Too bad they haven't acknowledged the potential for this update to brick a PS3. I would love to boot my PS3 up and be able to do anything with it, alas I can't. As soon as I flick the PSU switch in the back of the console I am greeted with a blinking red light and three quick beeps. I am not able to eject the Netflix movie that was in there at the time of update or anything. After talking to support they say I need to send the PS3 in for repairs to the tune of $149 + $29 shipping + ? taxes.

That's insane!
