JAPANESE GAME CONSOLE MAKER Sony has given its Playstation 3 a system software update that gets it ready for 3D gaming.
Sony has updated its PS3 firmware to 3.30 and fanbois will weep with joy as it makes the console 3D ready.
"In addition, this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony's 3D BRAVIA TVs," said Eric Lempel, director of Playstation Network operations.
There's no mention of a live date from Sony for 3D gaming on the PS3. But so much depends on support from games developers coming up with the goods and making sure there are enough fanbois willing to splash out on expensive 3D TVs.
Other updates include tweaked features for trophy listings. Trophy enhancements have been upgraded to make it easier to manage and compare trophy lists with friends. Trophy folders can now be sorted by game name and Group lists can be sorted by date. µ
Jason, you need to think before you rant.
Yes, Sony has a rubbish track record with proprietery media formats and software. 3D however is not Sony technology.
3D gaming sounds great. But honestly, not many ps3 users will upgrade to 3d. You're more likely looking at ps4 time.
I just bought a 55inch 1080p LCD, no way I'm forking out for a new one with 3D.
ALSO
You couldn't be more wrong regarding MS (not that I like them).
Microsoft doesn't force people to buy computers with Windows pre-installed (the companies that build the computers put Windows on it, as you will see, Microsoft don't sell computers).
There are only 3 viable OS options, Apple, Microsoft, and Linux (linux = open source = no marketing = no market share). Apple is the only one who forces people to buy computers with Apple OS installed, and they are allowed because they are a business, and it's a very standard model to sell your own software for your own device.
Tin foil hat boy.
While it is great that you already have a 120Hz refresh TV set, but you need an input which able to accept that as well or you stuck with a 60Hz input with interpolated 120Hz and that is not sufficient for the 3D. Unless a firmware update for the TV turn its hdmi into the new 3D standard one (I doubt it as everyone uses custom tailored chips not prepared to such a huge change) it is over
I have a 120Hz tv that my parents got me for Christmas and, last I heard, 120 Hertz is fast enough for 3d gaming, so I'm going to be pissed if I get left out in the cold simply because it isn't a Sony TV.
If it doesn't work on my tv, I call foul, because it means they're pulling the same kind of crap Microsoft does when it forces people to buy computers with Windows pre-installed.
