IT LOOKS LIKE getting a printed manual with a game might be a thing of the past.
Ubisoft has announced that it will no longer be shipping manuals with its future console titles for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Instead they will be replaced by an in-game manual that provides the same kinds of information about controls, game credits and legal information.
Ubisoft has been doing this with its PC games since last month.
According to the company, the first console title to feature such save-a-tree technology will be Shaun White Skateboarding.
Ubisoft is also making considerable changes to its packaging as part of its cunning plan to save the polar bear.
According to AFP, Ubisoft has partnered with Technimark to create a 100 per cent recycled DVD case made of polypropylene. Ubisoft says the first title to ship with the new packaging will be the PC version of Tom Clancy's Spinter Cell Conviction, which is due out next week.
Printed game manuals have always been a waste of money. Few gamers ever bother to read the manual anyway. µ
I agree that the manual is 99% rubbish, but for games that don't have a tutorial I hope that at least you can pause the game and pull up a help/controller settings screen. I've seen that in a few games (heck, even final combat had it!)and hopefully it will become standard.
