MOTOROLA HAS UPDATED its flagship Moto X smartphone, announcing a resfreshed model with a 5.2in Full HD display.
Announced on Friday, the "new Moto X," while more expensive than its predecessor at £419, features an improved 5.2in Full HD 1920x1080 resolution display, compared to the original's 4.7in HD 720p screen, and has a faster quad-core 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chip.
The Moto X will arrive running Android 4.4 Kitkat, and while Motorola hasn't skinned the user interface, it has added custom apps such as Moto Assist and enhanced voice control, allowing users to create a custom prompt for waking up the handset.
The smartphone has also seen an upgrade to the camera, having been upgraded from a 10MP f/2.4 sensor to a 13MP f/2.25 sensor with dual-LED flash and 4K video support.
The new Moto X also features an upgraded 2,300mAh battery with "turbo charging" support. This means that you can charge the phone with eight hours worth of battery power in just 15 minutes.
While its specifications have been improved, the biggest news for Brits will be that Motorola is expanding its Moto Maker service to the UK - allowing buyers to customise the handset's backplate and coloured accents and add custom engraving.
Motorola has announced that Moto Maker will continue to operate out of the US for now, before moving to China, but said that it will guarantee that UK customers receive their custom Moto X within a week from both locations.
As well as bringing the service to the UK, Motorola added a new real leather option to Moto Maker. You can also upgrade both the front and back of the Moto X from plastic to aluminium.
The new Moto X will be available at Amazon from the end of September, priced from £419. That will get you the 16GB model with a plastic back, while a bamboo or leather casing will up the price to £439. The 32GB model will fetch £459 and £479, respectively.
Motorola also announced on Friday that its Moto 360 smartwatch will be available in the UK from October, priced at £199. µ
