HUAWEI UNVEILED a handful of smartphones at IFA in Berlin on Thursday, including the octa-core Ascend Mate 7 and the iPhone-like Ascend G7.

The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is arguably the most exciting of the two, although it confusingly arrives with a 6in screen, complete with a 1920x1080 Full HD resolution. This comes housed inside the phone's aluminium casing, which measures 8.9mm thick and tips the scales at 185g.

Much like the HTC Desire 820 that was also announced at IFA, the Ascend Mate 7 has an octa-core processor. Huawei's Kirin 925 chip can be found under the bonnet of the smartphone, which comprises four large Cortex-A15 1.8GHz and four small Cortex-A7 1.3GHz cores.

Huawei claims that another of the Ascend Mate 7's standout features is its "single-touch fingerprint access", with the firm claiming it's "possibly the world's first" 6in smartphone to feature such technology. This, like the similar feature on the iPhone 5S and Galaxy S5, offers users a secure way to unlock the phone, and can be used to authenticate payment information.

Beyond that, the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 features Google's Android 4.4 Kitkat mobile operating system, a microSD card slot, dual 13MP and 5MP cameras and a 4,100mAh battery. It will be available in the UK later this quarter, with the 16GB model priced at €499, and the 32GB model at €599.

Huawei also took the wraps off of the Ascend G7 at IFA today, which while perhaps not as exciting as the Mate 7, comes with a full metal casing that looks very similar to the iPhone 5S.

The Ascend G6, which measures 7.6mm thick, also features a 5.5in HD 720p resolution screen, Android 4.4 Kitkat, 16GB of internal storage and a 3,000mAh battery. Like the iPhone, the handset will be available in silver, gold, and "space grey", but there's no word yet on a UK release.

Huawei also gave IFA attendees an glimpse at the Ascend P7 Sapphire, which beats Apple's iPhone 6 to it with its sapphire crystal screen. µ
