HTC ANNOUNCED the Desire 820 on Thursday, a mid-range phone that has a Qualcomm 64-bit Snapdragon 615 processor.
While it's set for the mid-tier market, HTC is clearly looking to challenge its big-name rivals with the Desire 820, which touts a 5.5in 1280x720 resolution screen, a 13MP rear-facing camera with f/2.2 aperture, and support for 4G speeds up to 150Mbps.
Perhaps the handset's most interesting feature is its 64-bit octa-core processor, as the firm eyes the Galaxy Note 4. This top-end chip comes courtesy of Qualcomm, and support for 64-bit software means that the smartphone likely will see an upgrade to Android L in the near future. At present, the HTC Desire 20 runs Google's Android 4.4 Kitkat mobile operating system release, which is skinned with the firm's Sense 6.0 user interface.
HTC CEO Peter Chou said, "Our new HTC Desire model gives entertainment lovers exactly what they are looking for; a powerful, fast, stylish smartphone that delivers their favourite content on a big screen at a competitive price.
"With the HTC Desire 820, we've combined the most advanced technology with the best possible entertainment experience and bold, distinctive design, to deliver a handset that is both desirable and affordable."
The handset also boasts a 2,600mAh battery offering a full day of talk time, an 8MP front-facing camera, HTC Boomsound audio technology and 16GB of internal storage, with support for microSD cards up to 128GB.
The HTC Desire 820 will be available from the end of this month, but UK availability details are yet to be announced.
Once available, the handset will be sold in a number of different colours - Marble White, Tuxedo Grey, Santorini White, Milky-way Grey, Tangerine White, Saffron Grey, Flamingo Grey, Blue Mist and Monarch Orange.
The launch of the Desire 820 comes just a week after HTC announced the Desire 510 as a sub-£200 4G handset. µ
