GOOGLE AND VMWARE have teamed up with Nvidia to bring virtual desktops and workstation grade graphics to Google Chromebooks.
The project uses the next generation of VMware's Blast and Nvidia's Grid virtual GPU technology to offer cutomers high power performance from the safety of a Google Chromebook.
VMware Blast is the firm's protocol for delivering a Windows desktop over a virtualised environment to serve up a remote desktop using HTML5, while Nvidia's Grid virtualises the GPU and data centre to provide graphical acceleration.
Google and VMware announced the project earlier this year, but have only just revealed that it will use Nvidia graphics to deliver onboard workstation class virtual graphics via the firm's Tegra K1 system on a chip (SoC).
The general idea behind the joint effort is to expand the hardware options for high performing virtual desktops and let customers select their systems of choice without compromising on power.
"Combined with VMware Horizon in the data centre, the solution will optimise graphics and CPU utilisation to allow more desktops and applications to be deployed on a single server," said Nvidia.
The technology might be seen first on Acer's recently announced Tegra K1 powered Chromebook 13 devices, which were announced earlier this month.
"We are breaking down traditional barriers to adopting virtual desktops and offering new economics for the delivery of graphics-intensive applications through the power of the cloud," said VMware. "Organisations of all industries and requirements will soon be able to embrace the mobile-cloud using a solution that offers a new way to work from three proven industry leaders."
The programme will be available to select Nvidia and VMware customers in the fourth quarter. Customers who want to try out VMware products with the Nvidia Grid vGPU can register online for early access. µ
