DROPBOX HAS ANNOUNCED a range of enhancements to its Pro service, bringing some of the additional features of Dropbox For Business to individuals for the first time, along with an aggressive price cut.
From today, Dropbox Pro users will be offered one tier of storage - 1TB for £7.99 per month. This represents a major jump from the £7.99 for 100GB and £39.99 for 500GB previously offered.
Dropbox head of marketing Kitty Oestlien said, "Our users tell us that they use Dropbox to store their entire digital life. It made sense for us to give them the tools to ensure they can do that. We're very excited by the additions to Dropbox Pro."
The price cut makes a gigabyte of storage more in line with the £6 charged by Google Drive, after it fired the first salvos in the price war earlier this year.
Dropbox announced that it will make a number of Dropbox for Business features available to Pro customers. These include expiration dates on links, read-only permissions for shared links and passwords for shared folders.
Also new will be the ability to remotely wipe Dropbox-synced data on lost devices to ensure that the information remains secure.
All of these additions are included in the Dropbox Pro offering. However, this does not include accounts supplemented by extra storage from product purchases, with many hardware makers offering free Dropbox storage with new smartphones and tablets.
We asked if the changes to the Pro service will result in diminishing service for free Dropbox users. Dropbox head of Product Chen Li Wang said, "We remain fully committed to the hundreds and thousands of customers of our free product. You never know - we might be back next month to make announcements about enhancements to that too."
