Nokia Lumia 635 with Windows Phone 8.1MICROSOFT HAS ANNOUNCED that it has reached some 300,000 apps in its Windows Phone store, almost doubling ts apps count in a year.

The firm is playing catchup with apps compared to Apple and Google, but says that hundreds of new applications are added to its store every day.

The 300,000 number comes out of a longer splash made by Microsoft that covers of all the numbers that matter to it. Microsoft by the Numbers provides information that covers such things as how much coffee Microsoft staffers drink, and how many works are in the Microsoft art collection.

Included in its figures are the number of times that Bing is used to index a Facebook update, an incredible two billion times a day, the number of apps in its Windows application store, a less impressive sounding 155,000, and the number of downloads these apps have seen, some 250 million.

Big numbers, but Microsoft is still lagging behind Apple and Google in terms of available mobile apps on its software store.

Its 300,000 and rising tally looks light when compared against Apple and Google's numbers, both of which tot up to some one million and have stayed relatively consistently level for some two years.

However, Microsoft is making progress. Last spring there were 130,000 downloads available, and by the end of the year there were some 70,000 more apps in the Windows Phone store.

Last February the firm claimed that each one of its Windows Phone users downloaded some 50 apps for personal use. µ
