MAYOR OF LONDON Boris Johnson has announced that the capital will have access to 5G mobile connectivity by 2020, allowing Londoners to download a film in less than a second.
The 5G network will be rolled out with the help of the University of Surrey, The Telegraph reported on Monday, with plans for the network to be formally unveiled later this week in the first long term infrastructure investment plan to be published by City Hall.
The investment plan will also take into account areas with poorer connections, with plans to bring better coverage to all.
"London is earning a reputation for being the tech capital of Europe and that is why we need to ensure every Londoner is able to access the very best digital connectivity. Rapidly improving the connectivity of this great city is a key part of the Infrastructure Plan for London," Boris Johnson was quoted as saying.
Once deployed, it is thought that 5G mobile internet will offer speeds 100 times faster than present 4G speeds, allowing users to download a movie, for example, in less than one second. Huawei, for example, has previously said that it expects 5G to arrive by 2020, saying that it expects user speeds of around 10Gbps.
Speaking earlier this year, European Commission VP for the digital agenda Neelie Kroes said that she wants 5G in the UK by 2020, so the country is no longer playing catch-up. She said, "We can no longer stick to legacy systems, 20th century needs, historically allocated powers. We must focus on our goal, on the digital imperative, and do what's needed to deliver it.
"As the problems you face are varied - so must our solutions be subtle and targeted... Where there are innovative opportunities, we must ourselves innovate to seize them... European 5G is an unmissable opportunity to recapture the global technological lead. And I hope you will be able to support and join us." µ
