FOR THE FIRST TIME, Apple will release a beta version of its Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite operating system to one million Mac users on Thursday, ahead of the operating system's release this autumn.

Apple announced its Mac OS X Yosemite beta programme in June. The initiative will see Apple give one million members of the general public access to the pre-release version of the operating system to help ensure that it's fully polished at release.

Apple said on its dedicated webpage, "The OS X Beta [Programme] lets you take part in shaping it by test-driving pre-release versions and letting us know what you think. Your comments will help us make OS X better for all Mac users."

Those chosen will be the first one million who register at Apple's OS X Yosemite beta webpage, and it appears that the firm is still taking submissions at the time of writing.

A place on the programme will be confirmed in an email from Apple, likely on Thursday, which will include a code that can be redeemed at the Mac App Store. From here, users can go ahead and install the software, assuming their Mac is already running the most recent version of Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

Apple has offered a few handy tips for the one million people who do get picked. It has advised that OS X Yosemite should be installed on a "secondary Mac", warning that there will be slight issues with the software as it's an unfinished version. However, we are not sure how many people out there, aside from those with deep pockets, in fact own a "secondary" Mac.

Apple has also advised that users back up all of their data before installing the new release, and that users install Yosemite updates as and when they become available.

The firm has also noted that the iOS Handoff features introduced in Mac OS X Yosemite will not be available yet.

If you have yet to sign up, you can follow our instructions on how to sign up for the Mac OS X Yosemite beta programme. µ
