EFF releases Privacy Badger add-on for Firefox and Chrome

This time, it's the badger doing the culling

THE ELECTRONIC FRONTIER FOUNDATION (EFF) has released Privacy Badger, its privacy control add-on for Firefox and Chrome web browsers.

Privacy Badger was first trialed in May when the EFF appealed for brave alpha testers.

The finished product is now available and is capable of controlling the level of information that your system shares with trackers that run silently in the background while you surf.

Claiming, "Nothing can stop the Privacy Badger from eating cookies when it's hungry!", the add-on has three states - red to indicate trackers that should be blocked, yellow to show that while tracking might be occurring, the website won't work without it, and green showing that no trackers are lurkin.

The extension also includes a "Do Not Track" (DNT) protocol, though the effect of the standard has been brought into question in recent months, with Yahoo having announced in May that it would no longer honour DNT requests.

Privacy Badger is based on code from Adblock Plus, but EFF plans to create "rigorous algorithmic and policy methods for detecting and preventing non-consensual tracking", which it will then offer to other adblockers and web browser developers to incorporate if they so wish.

The software source trees are available on Github, while the add-on itself can be accessed from this link.

The EFF has been very active lately, with initatives including plans for an open source, unhackable router, and a lawsuit against the National Security Agency (NSA) over its many surveillance operations and violations of civil liberties. µ
