THE POST OFFICE has announced that it will team with EE to launch its own mobile network later this year.
The UK national Post Office, which already offers home broadband and landline service, announced plans to become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) on Tuesday, revealing that it will piggyback on EE's network to launch its own, low-cost mobile service.
EE tooted its own horn in a statement, saying, "We’re delighted that the Post Office has selected EE to power its mobile services, reinforcing our position as the UK’s biggest, fastest and most reliable network."
Almost 500,000 people have signed up for the Post Office's telecoms services so far, which it hopes to expand with the mobile network.
Looking to challenge firms like Tesco and Asda, the Post Office said that it will offer "great value for money", although specific details have yet to be announced. We would imagine, though, that as a Post Office mobile customer, your minutes and texts allowance might randomly go missing.
Martin George, chief commercial office at Post Office said, "Our research tells us that people are seeking greater value, with one in three of those surveyed saying they intended to move away from one of the mainstream providers for their next service.
"We believe we are in an ideal position to offer a genuine alternative with over a third (36 percent ) also saying they would consider us as their mobile provider."
The Post Office will launch its mobile service this autumn, and it will be available online and through 50 branches before a nationwide rollout towards the end of the year.
"Our network of over 11,500 branches combined with our online, and call centre presence, gives us the perfect platform to become one of the most credible providers of mobile services in the market," George said.
"We believe we are in an ideal position to offer a genuine alternative." µ
