GOOGLE ANNOUNCED that it has picked up music streaming service Songza as its latest acquisition on Tuesday, as it looks to challenge Apple's Beats deal.
"Exciting news today - we're thrilled to welcome Songza to Google," the firm said in a Google+ post. "They've built a great service which uses contextual expert-curated playlists to give you the right music at the right time."
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed but reports claim that Google has thrown a "boat load of money" at Songza, with the firm looking to eventually bring the service's contextual playlist creation intelligence to Google Play Music and Youtube, yet another hint at an upcoming Youtube music streaming service.
Google said, "Over the coming months, we'll explore ways to bring what you love about Songza to Google Play Music. We'll also look for opportunities to bring their great work to the music experience on Youtube and other Google products."
Songza will remain as a standalone service for the time being, Google said. For those that have yet to try it, the music streaming service uses contextual data about its users to put together custom playlists. Much like Beats, the service relies heavily on human curation, with DJs, musicians and critics putting these personalised playlists together, rather than an algorithm.
Songza seemed pretty pleased about the deal, saying on its website, "You know why we love building Songza? Because you trust us to make every moment of your day better - and that's a pretty huge honour. Today, we're thrilled to announce that we're becoming part of Google.
"We can't think of a better company to join in our quest to provide the perfect soundtrack for everything you do." µ
