SILENT CIRCLE announced on Monday that its 'NSA-proof' Blackphone has started shipping to those who pre-ordered it.
Blackphone was developed through a joint venture of Silent Circle and Geeksphone, known as SGP Technologies, with the firms looking to develop a truly surveillance-proof smartphone in the wake of the past year's surveillance revelations.
It seems there are a lot of people out there who want it, as SGP revealed on Monday that it has sold out of its first batch of handsets, which have started shipping out to customers today. The firm noted that the Android-powered Blackphone will be available to order again from 14 July, likely thanks to the cash that got thrown at the firm earlier this month.
SGP CEO Toby Weir-Jones said, "We are excited to achieve this key milestone on schedule and ship a remarkable device to customers that is the result of an unprecedented combination of privacy and mobile innovations and visionaries.
"Blackphone's arrival puts mobile privacy directly in the hands of professionals and consumers everywhere. In a world where devices and apps increasingly offer features only in return for users' personal or sensitive information, the pent-up demand for Blackphone shows there is strong, international demand for our brand's devices and services that stand apart by placing privacy before all else."
Blackphone comes stuffed full of custom software and apps to ensure that it can properly protect its users' privacy, including "Silent Communications" apps enabling encrypted calls and text messages, WiFi protection, anonymous web browsing and VPN access, and private cloud storage.
In total, the handset boasts $700 worth of free security applications, with all subscriptions - such as that to Silent Circle's own mobile security suite - lasting 24 months.
If you fancy picking one up on 14 July, Blackphone will be available from its own website priced at $629. µ
