UK BROADCASTER Sky has began informing those who use Sky Go on games consoles, such as the Xbox 360, that from the end of next month it will no longer be free.
News of the price hike was first reported on the Sky forums. Users have been quick to slam the firm for the move, which will see Sky Go no longer free to those who use it via a games console, with the firm instead charging a fiver a month (following an introductory price of £2.50).
What's more, this move comes just weels after Microsoft cancelled the requirement for an Xbox Live Gold membership to access entertainment applications, such as Netflix and Sky go.
Sky's letter to users reads, "We wanted to let you know that from 29 July you'll no longer be able to access Sky Go using your Sky Go compatible games console. But don't worry, you'll still be able to access Sky Go on your games console after this date if you sign up for Sky Go Extra."
One user moaned on the Sky forums, "I think it is absolutely disgusting that as an Xbox owner I feel I am being penalised for having this app and using it. This also isn't the case if I wish to watch Sky Go on a mobile phone, a tablet or a computer... so why not the Xbox?"
Another unhappy customer added, "Couldn't agree more, I got the letter myself today. Ridiculous. I'm considering cancelling my Sky subscription completely - pay £47/month for TV & sports and still they want to extort more. Don't they realise there are numerous competing platforms that their customers can 'cut the cord' and move to?"
While the news hasn't gone down well with users, it's worth noting that with Sky Go Extra now required, those who cough up a fiver a month will be able to download shows to then watch offline, and will be able to use the app across four devices, rather than two.
Sky Go is expected to arrive on the Sony PS3 and PS4 later this year, but console users will have to also cough up to access the service.
It's still unclear when Sky Go will be coming to the Xbox One, but with the app no longer free, it's unlikely that many will care. µ
